AWH Legal Ltd - AWH Solicitors in Manchester & Blackburn: Review
The internet makes it much easier to find services you need such as legal advice. However with anyone able to make a flashy website and write good sales pitches - how do you know the best options for you? If you saw one firm had a multi-level office space with a dozen staff dressed smartly and a string of qualifications posted around the walls - fine. But on the web you could be dealing with a basement-based-20-year-old taking people's personal injury claims and selling them on to real solicitors.
This opening line from AWH solicitors does help put the mind at ease about it being a genuine law firm. There is a whole host of accreditation logos stamped at the bottom of each page as well. Of course, most people won't have any idea whether these are worth paying attention to. But we've been working with law firms for over 20 years now and can confidently say that any official Lexcel, Law Society or Legal 500 stamp of approval is a good sign. They can also be independently verified with each organisation.
Again this is something you can check on for most law firms if they are registered with The Law Society. If you check the entries for AWH you'll see a huge list of qualified staff. If you click on each person's name you can also see their qualification date and specialist areas. There's a good mix of experience and fresh blood amongst this firm's staff though. Peter King qualified in 1982, Samantha Harris in 1999, Fatima Musa in 2016, right up to Cathryn Davies in 2020.
Luckily the old days of heavy hourly rates and surprise bills at the end of a case are pretty much gone for most case types. Every solicitor that handles Personal Injury for example should never take any money up front or even if the case loses (the infamous no win, no fee). A large number don't take any at the end of the case either, opting to obtain their fees from the third party (100% compensation guarantee). The loss of legal aid for practically everything has completely altered the legal fee landscape.
15 minutes may sound like the bare minimum, but there are plenty of firms that will not speak to you at all about your case without an initial fee (usually £60-£100 for the hour). Or you could end up speaking to a junior in-experienced staff member for the 'free' 30-60 consultation on offer. So yes, 15 minutes isn't the most generous offering out there but it's far from the worst. Again though, this will not count for many case types such as injuries and medical negligence which you won't have to pay anything up front at all.
There are the usual customer testimonials around the site, but as we already know from last year's poll - people have an instant distrust of these no matter what the industry. So how are AWH being rated across the independent third party review boards?
"very professional and always responded to my queries and kept me updated"
"my solicitor Stacey Pimlott went above and beyond whilst fighting my case and would not hesitate to use again"
"updated me constantly about my case and answered any queries I had promptly."
In all mainly positive. This idea of a firm that does well with clients is backed up by their considerable growth over the years. It even made the local papers such as this piece in the Lancashire Telegraph about their takeover of Roebucks Solicitors. Apparently a local council leader and an MP attended the grand opening of the new merged office.
We hope it's clear by now why we decided to add this firm to the 1to1Legal network and recommend them to people. There are always a few things we would like to see from firms. For example, their staff profile pages are heavy on the personal information such as the solicitor's hobbies - but lacking in personal details such as direct email/phone numbers. But you'll never a find a firm that has everything.
When researching this firm yourself around the web, you may see names such as Carter Law, Roebucks Solicitors, and Roberts Jackson Solicitors. These are old names or names of firms they have merged with so should really no longer apply. The official company name is AHW Legal Ltd which is what shows on the Companies House records and The Law Society pages we linked to above. AWH Solicitors is the same firm and the website is www.awhsolicitors.co.uk as we link to above as well. www.awhsolicitors.com does not redirect to it though and www.awhlegal.co.uk is just an information site about the company background.
With so many other variants and names in the mix (e.g. www.roebuckslaw.co.uk or www.carterlaw.co.uk), we would definitely recommend bookmarking the firm's website once you're on it just in case. Whilst most scammers tend to target conveyancing firms, you never know what's around the corner.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with AWH Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.awhsolicitors.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
