Apprise Legal Services - Wills, Trusts, Probate & Estate Planning in Sutton Coldfield: Review

If you've already read a few of these review articles on our site, you'll know that we always try our best to find more varied types of firms to recommend rather than simply stuffing our directory with hundreds of firms (where the only difference between them seems to be their style of logo). We try to locate large firms, small firms, specialists and different types of legal professional for each area. That way you are more likely to find something that appeals to your specific needs and budget.

Apprise Legal Services are obviously specialists. Rather than being a general practice firm that happens to do Will/Probate matters as well - Apprise do nothing but such work.

There are areas of law where specialists are always recommended such as Criminal Law and Divorce. For Wills and Probate matters, many people can genuinely be fine with just a bog-standard template that a junior staff member helps you fill in. However if you own a business, have an ex-wife, children, life insurance, etc. or any other such considerations where you actually might care a bit more about who-gets-what once you're gone - then expert advice advice is definitely needed, and experienced advice if possible.

You'll also find that most specialists in this area of law are more likely to visit you at home for appointments and be able to advise you on related matters such as insurance, tax schemes, and even funeral plans. Something you're much less likely to get from a typical high street law firm that just states 'Wills' under a huge list of other case types they handle.

The term 'Estate Planning' is only just starting to gain ground here in the UK. In the US it has been used for much longer. There has been a huge rise in self-employment in this country though and family setups are getting increasingly complicated too. Thirty years ago a same sex civil partnership each life-insured with ex-partners and an adopted child would have been inconceivable. Now, it's practically 'common'. Therefore it's perfectly understandable that the number of firms that specialise in handling more than just those template Wills is on the increase as well.

Unfortunately the majority of Estate Planning firms will state something similar. So how can you tell the difference? Once source we often quote is the various Law Societies that legal professionals can sign up with. The Law Society of England & Wales for example can be searched by legal practitioner's name or the name of the firm. You will then be shown their case expertise and typically how many years each solicitor has been qualified for.

Of course, not all legal professionals/firms are registered with a Law Society and Apprise Legal is one of them. The only similar organisation we could find a registration with was The Society of Will Writers, but unfortunately they provide no real insight or background into each firm beyond the contact information and description.

So are there any consumer reviews to go on? Certainly there are the usual testimonials on the company's website:

"David made it easy to do, easy to explain to my Mother and my family and for a price that was excellent value for money."

"... he offered best practice advice and provide real insight into the how, what, where and why of the legal considerations of what we needed to achieve"

"I have and will continue to recommend him to my contacts requiring his services"

However a poll we ran a couple of years back indicated that not even a third of people trusted testimonials written on any company's own website. Thankfully these days there are a large number of indepedent review boards such as Google, Trustpilot, Yell.com, Yelp and so on. On those we still found very positive comments:

"Excellent fast and efficient service"

"... fully explained in easy to understand terms the various options available. No pressure."

"A thorough and caring aproach. Very satisfied with the outcome."

The advice we always give regarding review boards though is to absolutely read through the comments. Don't just look at an average rating and judge by that. Quite often we've seen reviews about a firm that have clearly been put under the wrong company and even one star reviews with very positive comments (meaning someone has made a clicking error).

A quick note on navigation with a triple barrelled company name. Whilst 'Apprise Legal' with and without the 'Services' on the end will still bring up the correct firm in the top organic results of search engines - we saw a lot of ads surrounding it. So just take care clicking. Google sadly allows advertisers to stuff the searched-for keywords into adverts. They are meant to filter out trademarked terms, but not all firms register a trademark - let alone takes the time to enforce it with search engines.

The official site we link to above is www.apprisels.co.uk with www.apprisels.com not currently showing anything. We assume the web address is meant to be taken as AppriseLS. When we tried typical variants such as www.appriselegal.co.uk or www.appriselegalservices.com, again nothing showed up. We also noticed a firm called Assured Wills, Trusts and Estate Planning in the very nearby town of Redditch kept popping up during our research. This seems to be be completely different company though.

We would therefore recommend bookmarking the correct site once you're on it just to make sure. There aren't nearly as many security concerns with a Wills & Probate specialist firm than with those that specialise in other matters such as Property (just seach for 'conveyancing bank details scam' to see how bad it is). But you never know what might happen next so it's always best to try and stay as safe as possible.

One last snippet from the firm's site that seems to summarise:

"Do you want to reduce the Inheritance Tax (I.H.T) paid upon your death? Do you want to prevent your spouse/partner from having to sell their home after your death? Do you want to protect your unmarried partner from not being able to inherit under the rules of intestacy? If you answered yes ... you MUST make a WILL."

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Apprise Legal Services it's best to visit the website (www.apprisels.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
