Like many perfectly good words in the English language, the word "specialist" has been ruined by marketing firms. We are in an authoritative position to state such, because we are a marketing firm and have had to argue with some of our clients who think using that word (even when it is not applicable) somehow encourages sales. It does, but if you're not really a specialist - should you be using it?
We think there are only two setups which should allow the use of the word "specialist" when it comes to law firms. Larger firms with multiple solicitors who each individually specialise in a particular area of law is a stretch, but it's not nearly as misleading as how others have used it. Because even though they handle multiple areas of law, they technically do have "specialist" solicitors. The client will therefore genuinely be benefiting from specialist expertise.
But the "specialist" most people probably expect when they see that word, is a firm which focuses on just one area of law.

That's the opening paragraph from the website of Farah Family Law. An example of a law firm we can 100% agree is specialist.
The reason people like the word "specialist" so much, is it makes them think the firm has - not just extensive experience - but a real desire to handle such cases. The obvious comparison is with a solicitor who takes on all sorts of cases but really doesn't know a great deal or have enough experience in any particular one. A Jack of all trades. But on this occasion the full quote "master of none, though oftentimes better than master of one" - usually does not apply. The law is not something you can think your way around the problem.
There are a some areas of law where people really want this type of specialist. They want someone who only does these types of cases day in, and day out. Someone who knows all the "tricks" the opposition might get up to. Who knows the loopholes. Who knows the short cuts. When it comes to Divorce, Criminal Defence, Motor Offenses, and Immigration we see an increasing number of people searching for a "specialist" in the strictest sense of the word.
Farah Family Law certainly would certainly qualify as such a specialist in the minds of most people. Why could that be important for family matters? Because the title "Family Law" covers a huge number of niche legal battles. Family Law isn't just divorce and child custody. The short list on the firm's website includes Divorces (Contested and Uncontested), financial settlements, Pre-nuptial/Post-nuptial agreements, Injunctions, Mediation, Parental Responsibility, Contact and Residence Orders, Muslim and Sharia-specific issues, Adoption, Child Abduction, Domestic Violence, and more.
If a solicitor is only handling one or two family law matters per year out of a larger case range, it is unlikely they have come across most issues that could arise. That's when having a specialist firm could make the difference between achieving the result you want versus not. However, your ex burning in lava is not achievable by even the most skilled family lawyer.
Farah Family Law's offer for a free consultation may not sound unusual. Many legal practices offer the same thing for a range of legal matters. But when it comes to family law - it can be rare. Our 1to1Legal staff currently mirrors society well, with half of them being divorced. Every single one of them remember ringing round for a solicitor and being asked for retainers before they could even speak to someone. One firm in Preston demanded a £5000 retainer before having a consultation. So don't dismiss any offer to talk first.
