For many people across the UK, the idea of obtaining legal services still brings to mind a downtown high street office with people with big desks and expensive suits talking jargon. They assume a lengthy procedure and high costs. Sadly, the UK's legal system was like that for centuries and has been very slow to change.

Luckily, a range of options have become available that can really help people obtain swift, cost-effective help. We discussed the new Direct Access scheme in the previous article which allows people to hire a Barrister directly rather than having to pay a solicitor to hire a Barrister for them. But many still don't know about other options such as using Arbitration or Mediation firms.

Quantity surveying is one of those terms that everyone knows, but isn't always quite sure what it involves. If you are a company that deals with property or infrastructure though - you definitely will. But did you know some can help with disputes?

How do you choose one firm over another? First we would recommend reading this article on the MPG website entitled 'Why Use Mediation'. It not only provides greater insight into the process itself, but also highlights where you might be able to save time and money using a service such as MPG over hiring a law firm to litigate straight away.

Unlike the law firms we cover on this site, there are unfortunately no great resources online to see background checks on surveying companies or databases listing the work expertise and history of staff at each firm. In that regard, the legal industry has made some great strides in consumer information. It would be great to see this from other regulatory bodies. MPG Quantity Surveyors Ltd is regulated by the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors). But the RICS do not supply the level of consumer help we see on sites such as The Law Society of England & Wales.

The only resource people can use in these situations tends to be reviews. MPGQS lists comments from previous and current clients on their website:

Those are a few snippets from much larger comments. Often testimonials supplied by the firm are not taken as seriously as those on public review boards. However, it should be pointed out that in the commercial sector it's not just Mr Anon or Ms Smith leaving such reviews. These are businesses who are willing to have their brand name displayed as recommending the services of another commercial firm. So they really should be given a bit more weight than regular consumer testimonials.

The official site is at www.mpgqs.com which we link to above. There does seem to be a mirror of the site on mpg-group.consulting but we would recommend bookmarking the main site if you plan on returning. The site is HTTPS secure for submitting your personal details via their online form.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with MPG Quantity Surveyors Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.mpgqs.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
