Briffa Legal Ltd Intellectual Property (IP) Solicitors in London: Review
We're always open about the fact that some of the firms we review might be current partners of ours. Roughly it's about half and half right now. However, no firm gets to dictate what we write in their review or make changes unless we've made a factual error. If you've read other reviews on here then that should already be clear. Not everything we say in our reviews is positive or even 'constructive criticism'.
Why am I bringing this up? Because I'm about to write a very glowing review of this particular firm and I don't want people to think for one second that it's because I've been paid to do so or that my pro-stance is typical. It's really not.
Finally managing to convince Briffa Legal Ltd to partner with us was actually quite the coup. We're always looking to get specialists on board, but finding specialists that aren't intensely arrogant about the fact they are specialists is more difficult than you might think. One look at Briffa's website though with the large text, bright pinks, yellows, and flower images - we knew we were on to something.
That's not to say they appear anything less than professional:
Whenever we see claims of "highly rated", "renown", or "widely reputed" on a firm's website, we scour the web looking for the evidence. It's rarely there and we make a point of mentioning it in their review along with a snapshot of the infamous "No.1 in the area! (*according to my mother)" billboard produced by a US realtor. With Briffa though, there's bucket loads. Here's what a few of their peers said about founder Margaret Briffa in the Chambers & Legal 500:
Reviews, articles and recommendations of this firm are available all over the place. But the firm's enthusiasm unashamedly spills out of their website anyway. Most people won't bother clicking the 'Blog' link on commercial websites because typically that's exactly what they are - i.e. "commercials". Mini-articles stating how great the firm is at dealing with x, y, or z. The Briffa Blog on the other hand is written by various members of staff who simply seem to want to comment, point out, or express their opinion about current intellectual property matters. I skimmed through about a dozen and didn't see a single bit of sales-pitchery thrown it. Everything from Prince's posthumous music, to Monster battles and Marvel Comics. It was an actual Blog. If you don't know how passionate you have to be about a subject to keep a real blog going - just try it.
Where does this love of all things IP come from? Normally staff profiles on a solicitor's site either read like a CV, or worse - like a dating profile. (I really don't care what my solicitor's hobbies, pets or favourite colour are. Do you?) Briffa's staff profiles are actually quite revealing as to why the firm does so well across so many industries and countries.
Aside from the founder Margaret, the next two staff profiles on the 'Team' page include the Practice Manager Adrienne Wallace - an accomplished amateur photographer who worked for many years in the movie industry with Rank Film Distributors. She then did 7 years at another international Intellectual Property firm before joining Briffa in 2001.
Joshua Schuermann is from Paris and was a professional musician and production assistant before becoming a solicitor, moving to London, and studying Media and Entertainment Law. He speaks fluent German and French and still works in the music industry on the side.
There are many solicitors out there that deal with Intellectual Property having studied law at University. They may also deal with divorces, personal injury, and criminal law in the same day. The difference with Briffa's team is that they only do Intellectual Property day-in, day-out. They also seem to have had prior lives and professions where Intellectual Property protection would have been important to them personally.
To top it off, they have a wide range of case studies on their site. We love case studies in the same way teenagers love YouTube. It's as if they knew exactly what we look for in a firm, and did it.
Any negatives? I don't like their logo. It's an awkward shape and the colours are too pale to display around our site easily.
One quick note on navigation: we've linked to the official website above which is www.briffa.com, not www.briffa.co.uk which is currently owned by a different firm. Whatever you do, don't go to www.briffalaw.com (just don't) and the most common misspelling www.brifa.com and .co.uk are not currently owned by anyone either. I won't go through the full list of possible variants. But as it's likely you'll be dealing with payments and sensitive documents - it might be an idea to bookmark the site to ensure you always come back to the correct place.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Briffa Legal Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.briffa.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
