Acumen Business Law, Commercial Solicitors in Crawley: Review

If you've read some of our other articles, you'll know we're against firms forcing the idea they're modern using cheap gimmicks such as carbon-offset computers or bean-bags in the waiting room. Most of the time they are quirks for the sake of quirkiness and often to the client's detriment. Answering the phone with a "Hey there, buddy!" may sound good in a staff brain storming session, but in practice it simply makes clients seeking legal help with serious (often traumatic) issues feel very uneasy and trivialised.

On the flip-side, there are solicitors who refuse to acknowledge the existence of Skype or even email communication. Have Acumen Business Law found a happy medium between the two? Well, let's start here:

"Acumen Business Law is an award winning, innovative and dynamic Law Firm, providing legal services in a way different to other law firms."

Acumen Business Law

You'll see 'we-have-awards' and 'we-are-unique' statements on many legal service websites. Saying you are unique is currently quite an un-unique thing to do. However, Acumen have followed it up with these sentences:

"Democratically run by all, with no secretaries, letters dictation or pretension - just modern, approachable, smart lawyers and top notch support of a different kind. (And if you happen to see a lawyer in flip flops - not to worry, that's just one of the ways we do happy!)"

I can absolutely, 100% concede that this is a completely unique statement. Does it go too far into the realm of frivolity? Acumen don't deal with personal injury, divorce, wills or anything other than business law. Their day-in, day-out work does not involve picking up the shattered pieces of people's lives and demanding justice from a judge. If it were, then definitely the whole flip-flop thing could be almost insulting. Instead their work will typically involve developing contracts, terms, franchise agreements, trademarks, pensions and answering general questions about issues surrounding the running of a business. This could be a tanning salon, toy shop, magazine, cafe, or even charity. Indeed, a certain level of upbeat extra positivity and cheeriness is probably welcome.

I'm still not a fan of solicitor staff profiles that feel the need to share the person's favourite food, pets, or hobbies. But at least on this occasion the general portrayal of Acumen's persona matches such revelations. I can't say I like the description of their video feed either:

"Not in the mood for reading? We get it! Feet up, get some popcorn and enjoy!"

But whatever image Acumen has chosen to run with, their staff absolutely have the qualifications and experience you would want. Some are solicitors, some are ex-business owners, some are ex-business owners turned solicitors. There's a level of balance and insight you simply will not get from a regular business law firm. On top of this, they offer far more than your typical business law firm too:

"In our Free Legal MOT session you will meet one of our Commercial Solicitors for approximately 1.5 hours (at no cost), to discuss with you all the legal aspects of your business, including: using the law to your business advantage; Brand Protection & TM; legal essentials to secure your business; guidance on contracts with clients, suppliers and other parties; Employment Law issues; cost effective dispute mitigation; and other specific legal queries you may have."

At this point I'm guessing that even if you're not crazy about their hippy-go-lucky (yes, I said it) appearances - as a business owner you'd be crazy not to take them up on such an offer. Common sense would also dictate that if Acumen Business Law could not convert people after giving away such large amounts of their time, they would have gone out of business - and they haven't.

Many law firms attempt colloquialisms on their website. Usually it's in an awkward manner equivalent to wearing a sideways baseball cap whilst talking to teenagers. Floundering bosses will watch a documentary on how Google is run and suddenly order their staff to install an aquarium and wear logo-ed t-shirts instead of suits. But if there is nothing actually special or unique about a firm except the fact they are trying to look trendy, then the attempt falls flat on its face. Consumers are not that gullible any more.

However, it doesn't take much digging to see that Acumen really do have something unique set up. If you like flip-flop wearing solicitors, great. If not, I'm highly recommending you look past it. I have 20+ years in the legal industry and am not a fan of every quirk I read on Acumen's website. But whatever ideas may seem odd to an old fogey like me, it's obviously resulted in a new way of thinking and a service which I believe this section of the legal industry sorely needed.

A quick note should be made on navigation as we're dealing with a three word web address. Obviously we've linked to the main website which is www.acumenbusinesslaw.co.uk hosted on an https secure setup (the green padlock in your browser). But make sure to include the www if you're typing it in manually, otherwise you could get a security warning. There are other companies serving businesses with 'Acumen' in the name including marketing, software and risk analysis services. The most common spelling error would obviously be 'accumen'. But whilst people might try searching for Acumen Solicitors or Acumen Legal - right now for mis-spellings and general terms the correct firm/website is listed at the top of the organic seach results. There are other firms advertising above them though, and as www.acumenbusinesslaw.com, www.acumen.co.uk and other variants do not seem to be owned by the firm - we would still suggest bookmarking the site to be sure you come back to the correct place later. Normally, scammers only try to trick people for legal matters such as property sales or claim payouts. But you never know.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Acumen Business Law it's best to visit the website (www.acumenbusinesslaw.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
