The Law Partnership Ltd - Solicitors in Coventry: Review

Hopefully if you've been on our site for even a short while it should be clear we are not a 'law firm directory'. We do not add every single firm out there into a database for you to flick through. There are already enough of them about and you've most likely arrived at our site because you've seen a post of ours offering more information about actual firms and help articles.

In this article we're going to share a few tips on how we check up on firms we're thinking of adding. Many of the things we do from a business vetting side might be useful to you from a consumer side as well. For our example (as the title suggests) we're going to use The Law Partnership. Here's the first quote from their site we'll discuss:

"The Law Partnership Solicitors have been based in Coventry, West Midlands for 20 years"

It may be surprising to learn that not all firms state a level of experience. Also, not all of them state it clearly. Then there are firms that state useless dates such as "founded in 1881". While that may have meant something several decades ago, it is no longer any measure of a company's promise. We don't usually tell people what to do in our articles, but it's safe to say you can ignore such founding dates when deciding which legal services firm to use.

With much more flexibility these days in working placements, you could find a 40-year veteran solicitor at a 1-year old law firm and a 1-year novice at a 200-year old firm. The age of the firm's branding does not really tell you anything about the experience of the solicitor you'll get. (I know, it sounds simple now.)

"We provide sound, practical advice in many aspects of the legal industry."

Luckily there is a great resource on the website of The Law Society of England & Wales. A site we've often praised and sadly without good counterparts in Scotland or Ireland yet. The Law Society have a data-packed user-side offering where you can search information on any registered firm. This includes alternate contact details, other offices, areas of law practiced, languages spoken, and most importantly - qualification dates.

That means you can look up how many years someone has been a solicitor for any of those firms and what areas of law they specialise in. If we look up the details for this firm we can see two named solicitors. Abdul Khan who qualified in 1999, and Rashminder Sarai in 1997. Plenty of experience there.

"Specialising in Conveyancing, Landlord & Tenant, Immigration, Family Law, Wills Probate Trusts & LPA"

It can often be confusing when law firms state long lists of 'specialist' areas of law. That's because it is. Unfortunately there are more than a dozen ways to be a specialist or non-specialist firm. But let's take two extremes to highlight this example.

If a firm has only one solicitor on board yet states they handle every case type possible - then it is unlikely they will excel at any of them. However, if a firm has a dozen solicitors and states they handle a dozen different areas of law. That could still be a 'specialist' firm if each solicitor is expert in each case type. 'Divide the number of case types by the number of solicitors' is in no way a perfect rule. If a single solicitor lists twenty different types of injury claim - they are still a specialist in Personal Injury law. It's a difficult thing to judge.

"Our Solicitors offer personalised and caring legal services for individuals."

Most firms will make a claim about happy clients. The best and most popular way to check up on this kind of statement on a law firm's website is through public reviews. Although many firms provide 'testimonial' pages, according to our last poll not very many of you trust them (8%). So what are the independent boards such as Google, Trustpilot, Yell, Facebook, etc. saying about The Law Partnership?

"worked hard to get my sale through really quickly, despite the pressure"

"worked very quickly and kept in touch with updates of both my house sale and purchase"

"communication was fantastic - clear and timely"

Never rely on just star ratings when measuring up firms. Always read the comments. Lots of people make mistakes leaving reviews so the best thing to do is look for any positive or negative 'themes' amongst the actual written feedback left by people. The comments for TLP are very positive. With extra emphasis on good speed during house sales/purchases.

That's alot more impressive than you might think. We did an entire article on Conveyancing reviews because the majority of firms that handle conveyancing in the UK will have an overwhelming number of negative reviews. Some of the largest conveyancing companies in the UK handling hundreds of transactions a month have star ratings in the 3s. That's because there are problems and delays in a house transaction 99.9999% of the time. Plus, for some reason the other side of the transaction will often write a negative review on a firm out of frustration. Something you just don't see elsewhere. So a conveyancing solicitor with a high rating is actually a rarity.

"We strive to resolve legal matters in a non-confrontational way – we prefer to resolve disputes outside of the courts through mediation and arbitration."

A quick note on navigation. To start with, Google is trying to be stricter on review searches, so these days you sometimes have to type in the city of the firm along with the name to get reviews to show up (e.g. "the law partnership solicitors coventry"). With the firm having generic terms in the branding it does mean you're less likely to get the correct firm when making errors too, such as searching for "the legal practice".

It may therefore be an idea to bookmark the correct site if you plan on coming back. The official site we link to above is www.tlps.co.uk and is HTTPS secure. Common variants such as www.tlps.com or www.thelawpartnership.co.uk are currently owned by different firms. Why is navigation so important? Because this firm deals with property sales which have been a target for scammers for a long time. People have handed their entire house deposit into fraudster's bank accounts sometimes simply because they got an official-looking email telling them to change the bank details. So please keep aware of where you are and who you're communicating with.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with The Law Partnership Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.tlps.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
