Cubism Law T/A Solicitors Surrey in Guildford: Review

As always, here at 1to1Legal we seek out new ideas and setups to find you the best range of options we can. This article on Cubism Law has been a long time coming. They joined our panel some years ago, and have grown steadily since. But not in the usual 'buy more offices, hire more people' way. First some history.

The firm's name comes from the artistic movement. I'm a big Dali fan so have seen a few examples of the Cubism style. We all find our inspiration from different sources, and Andrew Pena (managing director and founder of Cubism Law) gives quite a detailed explanation of how he came to choose the name on the firm's 'About Us' page. Andrew was formerly a partner at Field Fisher Waterhouse, but decided to create something that was not based on the traditional partnership structure:

"Our aim was simple; to free our partner-level lawyers from the daily grind of partnership politics and administration so that they could focus on what they do best - the delivery of an exceptional legal service in a modern and innovative way."

The decision to create something new for the legal industry is a business decision, requiring a founder and an influx of like-minded people to know how businesses work and grow. It's therefore no surprise that the main London office states a focus on corporate case types such as: Consumer Law, Entertainment, Entrepreneurs, Franchising, Hospitality & Leisure, Publishing, Recruitment and Technology.

But whilst their head office houses a team of over 35 lawyers and 15 support staff, the Cubism brand is being applied to existing firms across the country. As described in a Law Gazette article the firm is:

"a limited company that recruits senior lawyers with established clients and provides branding and office infrastructure"

A good example of this is the Guildford based firm 'Solicitor Surrey', who now bears the CubismLaw logo on its website. Unlike the 'Quality Solicitors' branding we've detailed in other articles, (which basically overwrites the original company in the same way a Spar would take over a local newsagent), the logo is the only change we've seen externally for the Solicitor Surrey firm so far. They even handle different case types than the head office such as Family Law, including: divorce, separation, civil partnerships, pre-nuptial agreements, child abduction, grandparents rights and more.

They do cover some business related problems such as employment law, disputes, defamation, etc. They won a Corporate Vision Legal Expert Award in 2016, and claim 20 years worth of experience helping both individuals and businesses. Impressively, this Family Law focused practice boasts two generations of lawyers working from their Guildford office too. A free initial consultation is also on offer, with a promise that you won't pay a penny until you've heard the options and "agreed in writing".

The SolicitorSurrey.co.uk talks only of their own services and setups though, confirming the initial premise of Cubism's goal to simply make existing firms work better.

Interestingly, our research into the firm introduced us to an interesting concept in the providing-info-type-article-scene. The Lawyer website has posted a Q&A piece with Cubism's founder. There seems to be quite a few such articles on their site. At first glance, we're not sure whether the questions being asked really give you much insight into the company and/or services. "What car do you drive?", "Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?", and so on make up the bulk of the questions. So whilst we could see this idea spreading to LinkedIn as being useful for people seeking new staff, we wouldn't recommend it as something to base your choice of legal representation on.

I'll finish off with two final quotes from the main Cubism Law website. The site has a lot of quotable sections ... no, that wasn't a compliment. I like the idea of Cubism's setup. I like seeing small firms access good help without have to 'sell out'. We wouldn't have them on our network if we didn't think they were a good idea. But if I had to pick something that I didn't like when trawling through the information available - it was the amount of non-information posted across the main CubismLaw.com site. Line after line of:

"We try to do more than peer through the magnifying glass of the law, and our lawyers look at things in a more rounded, less narrow way, 'entertaining' different ideas to explore alternative options ..."

As if a hundred business gurus were asked to create a blurb for the company's website, but they accidentally printed them all instead of just choosing one. Of course considering the waffle I allow myself to put out regularly, my criticism could be seen as slightly hypocritical. ;) Here is one I liked though, and the type of salesiness (you know what I mean) people want to see:

"Ensuring the right advice, to achieve the right outcome, at the right price."

Obviously, researching website variants will depend on which firm you're looking for. For the main firm - www.cubismlaw.com is where you want to go, www.cubismlaw.co.uk is blank and does not redirect you. Similarly, www.cubism.com and www.cubism.co.uk are owned by different companies as well. As for the www.solicitorsurrey.co.uk website we covered in this piece, the opposite applies with www.solicitorsurrey.com not existing. Bookmark the sites when you're sure you're on the correct ones just in case. If you haven't read our articles and links to pieces about law firm email scams, do so. It's not just banks that have phishing problems.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Cubism Law Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.cubismlaw.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
