EMD Law LLP Solicitors in Staplehurst & St Leonards-on-Sea: Review

The past few articles have been about firms with a specialist goal or unique setup. We try to ensure we can recommend a range of services in each area, not just cram every single firm onto a page. There are always different options available and sometimes you don't necessarily need a solicitor. We've covered Direct Access barristers and even paralegal firms which both can result in lower costs.

But all these changes and niche specialisations firms can now focus on thanks to being able to market their services online to a wider audience - has never negated the need for the standard 'high street' style solicitor's office. Today's article covers EMD Law LLP which, from appearances, looks to fit that description quite nicely. But a lot of firms can seem to fit into that box with many using similar site wording, making similar promises, and even using similar images on their pages. (Lots of people smiling, looking at paperwork, and the obligatory handshake snapshot.)

"We believe that visiting a solicitor should not be a frightening or daunting experience and we do our utmost to put our clients at ease"

EMD Law LLP

This snippit from EMD Law's website kicks off a theme the firm seems to want to get across. That of a sizeable, high street office with experienced professionals - but not in the old style of solicitors some of us might remember from the pre-2000s. They do claim a long history with 'established in 1918' on the About Us page. But thankfully it's not a selling point they push like some firms do. Please note that even if you see a firm touting an ancient date such as 'established in 1881', that has absolutely no bearing on how good the office is today.

Originally starting under the name Baily Strickland and Bryant, the firm became Baily Bryant & Dumbleton in 2003, then finally EMD Law LLP in 2008. There's plenty of experience within this law office with solicitor Robert Taylor having qualified in 1977 and Elizabeth Dumbleton in 1999. But there's also some fresh eyes helping those wise heads with staff members Anthony Greenall and Georgina Maxa qualifying as legal professionals in 2019 and 2022 respectively.

"At EMD Law we have a strong commitment to client care and aim to offer a friendly, efficient and cost effective service to all our clients."

Typically the first thing people do when checking up on a firm is to view the public comment boards such as Google, Facebook, Trustpilot, etc. There are a lot of review sites with billions of comments. But you might find law firms are never drowning in reviews - good or bad. That's because while everyone is very happy to shout out to the world about the pizza they just tasted, they are often less keen to announce their messy divorce, bankruptcy, criminal charges, or personal injuries.

This means that if you ever find a firm only has a handful or even zero reviews, don't take that as a negative sign. Certainly for legal services it will be the case that people are more likely to leave a comment mainly if something went wrong. Otherwise, why share your private matters with the world? We definitely recommend reading the full reviews when it comes to solicitor offices and to never just flick through star ratings. So what are they saying about this firm on the web?

"at the end of the phone most of the time when you need help"
"may not be the cheapest solicitors around but you get what you pay for"
"explained everything so that we had a good understanding of the matter at hand"

Those are a few snippets from the most popular independent review forums and as you can see, they are positive on the whole. We tend not to quote any provided testimonials in these articles. That's not for the same reason many of you stated in our poll last year - i.e. only 8% of you apparently trust company provided comments. We just rarely find good comments in the hand-picked testimonials. Ones that provide at least a little insight into the firm's dealings with customers, like these snippets above.

"Initial free 30 minute consultation on some matters"

This probably sounds little more stingy than it should. For personal injury matters, your whole case will likely be free under a no win, no fee agreement. While we have seen firms offering a full initial hour free for cases such as divorce - there are also plenty more offering only 15 mins or nothing at all. At least this sounds as though you will get to talk to an actual solicitor about your case. Not just fill a form in with a junior member of staff. So we would mark this one down as very much a positive.

There was a chat feature on the site, but the two times we tried it we were simply asked for our phone number early on so someone could call us. The site is https secure for submitting your personal details via the contact form. It might suprise you to know that not all law firms have made this recommended change to their site yet. So keep an eye out for the padlock when browsing. On this occasion the firm's official web address also matches the branding being located at www.emdlaw.co.uk, but note that www.emdlaw.com is for a different firm. We've also seen some search results for this firm under 'Hastings' and 'Maidstone' as those are much larger cities near their offices.

"The firm has two offices; the Head Office is in Staplehurst, Kent and there is a branch office in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex."

It's really important to be aware of these things online these days, especially since this firm handles property matters which have been the target of scammers for many years now. Some people have handed their entire house deposit into a fraudster's bank account after receiving an official-looking email saying the payment details had changed. If you're about to pay tens of thousands of pounds into an account and an email like that comes through - obviously you need to phone your solicitor at the firm to check.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with EMD Law LLP it's best to visit the website (www.emdlaw.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
