Calio Claims Ltd - Personal Injury in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth & Dundee: Review
In all of our articles about law firms we try to cover details about the firm themselves but also any general tips that stand out which may help consumers as they try to select the best fit for them. For example, our article on Lindsays which highlights the differences between a large firm with specialists, and a small specialist firm. Today while reviewing the website of Calio Claims we'll also be discussing branding. Because Calio Claims is - to quote the firm - 'Powered by Lindsays'.
The idea of law firms using separate branding for personal injury matters arose as a matter of necessity a few decades ago in the big compensation culture boom. As the rules and regulations and guidelines flew around constantly changing - plus with government, law courts, and regulatory bodies constantly disagreeing with each other - it became easier for law firms to have a separate marketing brand.
With that all in the past, why do law firms still use separate brand names and 'Trading As' statements? The most common reason is modern appeal. For the new generations of potential clients looking up a law firm on the internet, they are simply more likely to want to use a firm called "Swift Claims" compared to "Swift & Johnson Solicitors Ltd". The first sounds like a modern firm whilst the second sounds like a crusty old high street building where the owners don't know a Tweet from an Insta.
Unfortunately the Scottish Law Society is still behind it's English/Welsh counterpart in user-side offerings. For legal help south of the border we always recommend people check out The Law Society of England & Wales' website to get a wealth of background information. But on the Law Society of Scotland's website the search function is very limited and doesn't always match well. You can also only view details as pop ups which gets very difficult on a mobile device.
So what can you use? Like most companies, Calio Claims provides client testamonials on their website. Here are some snippets:
"We are delighted to have received satisfactorily settlements"
"I just wanted to say thank you for handling my claim"
But typically the hand-picked comments which firms place on their website have a far narrower vocabulary range (to put it politely) than those on the public forums. That's probably why only 8% of people clicked that they trusted company provided testimonials in our poll last year. So what are the independent boards such as Google, Trustpilot, and Facebook saying?
"in regular contact through email with next steps and updates of the claim"
"ensured I was well informed"
The comments are still mostly positive, but you get a much better feel of the positive themes. This is true for negative issues as well with any firm you are researching. That's why we always recommend people read the actual comments and never just flick through star ratings when deciding which firm to use. You'd be amazed at the number of law firms with 5 star reviews for their new menu or 1 star reviews for the poor parking in the town centre. A 1 star review with no comment left should be ignored in our opinion.
There are two things to note about this statement. First is that every personal injury firm should charge you no fees at all if they lose your case. We don't know a single firm that charges for losses. But, no-win-no-fee is not the same thing as 100% compensation. Those are two very different statements. Some firms do charge a fee if they win. This is typically in larger cases such as Medical Negligence where a lot more time and risk have to be taken on by the firm. But make sure you get fees absolutely clear at the outset and talk to more than one legal professional before deciding which firm to go with.
A quick note on navigation due to the different names. The official website of the backing firm Lindsays is www.lindsays.co.uk, with the official site of this branding being www.calioclaims.co.uk which is HTTPS secure for submitting your personal details via the contact form. The office details for each location are the same. This really should just be a matter of what logo is at the top of the emails and letters you receive. It's just that the Calio Claims branding/team focus solely on Personal Injury matters. For anything else you'll probably be under the Lindsays departments.
If you are looking for information or reviews about the firmm Google has change a little recently and you may have to enter the location as well as the firm's nam. e.g. 'calio claims glasgow', which might show up different reviews than 'calio claims edinburgh'. Being aware of what you're typing and what site you're on is important because of the huge amount of scams such as phishing on the web.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Calio Claims it's best to visit the website (www.calioclaims.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
