If you've done some research on Boyd Rice already, you may have spotted company information sites listing the firm as being created in 2017. That would make this "30 years" statement on the firm's website slightly confusing. To clarify, most company info sites state incorporation dates taken from Companies House. That just means the company went 'Limited' on the date they show. Firms may have existed prior to that for hundreds of years.

One of the first things we always look for on law firm sites are staff pages. We constantly advocate and advise firms to create such if they don't already have them, or to expand if they simply list a few names and phone numbers. On the Boyd Rice site, they've already embraced this developing trend.

Neil McGranaghan manages the litigation department and has extensive experience dealing with injury claims including those that occurred outside Northern Ireland - such as the Republic of Ireland or Europe. Claire O’Mahony joined the firm in 1994 and is experienced in all aspects of family law including divorce, children, unmarried couple disputes, and so on. Ben Wall mostly handles property matters having had a varied career, including time as a barrister and at a major international law firm.

Whilst this may look like just a quick bunch of mini CVs, what might not have stood out is the fact each lists their direct email and phone number contact details. That's much rarer than you might think. The information provided also shows a wide range of varied backgrounds and lengthy histories within the legal industry. Not only that, but each person is quite focused on specific case types rather than trying to 'jack-of-all-trade's it.

"Don't most firms do that?" No. We recently reviewed a firm where the two main solicitors listed their secretaries' (plural) contact details instead of their own. As you'd expect, the public reviews of that particular firm included several comments about clients feeling fobbed off onto junior staff. So what about reviews on Boyd Rice? If you've read some of our other articles, we've gone into detail about how consumers often ignore the testimonials solicitors tend to post on their websites:

They always sound good and sometimes far too good. So far we've never seen a balanced testimonial page on a law firm's site with both negative and positive points expressed. Would you post your negative feedback on your site though? Like everyone else, we go to third party spots like Google, Yell, Yelp, TrustPilot, etc. to try and find unsolicited or at least unfiltered reviews with all their spelling mistakes, excessive capitalisation and lengthy descriptions of why they are or are not happy. But in this instance nearly all the well written, spellchecked, and flattering reviews from Boyd Rice's site appear on the public review sites as well.

Most likely the firm has encouraged clients to post their comments on third party sites, but it does mean there isn't a wealth of reviews to go from. This is typical for law firms though, as many people do not wish to talk about their personal legal matters in a public forum the same way they might be eager to tell people about the great restaurant they've just visited.

Unfortunately, the Northern Ireland Law Society website is not as user-friendly as its England & Wales counterpart. Usually we link to each firm's Law Society page so you could see the various expertise and experience details of the firm and its solicitors. Instead we're going to finish with a link to an article on BoydRice's sponsorship of the Tour of Ards race. As the name suggests, it's like the Tour de France but without the "de" and it's around Ards.

It's increasingly common these days for firms to connect with something charitable. They may simply list an organisation they support, they might have a costume day to raise money, clean up a park, sponsor a sports team, or join in with existing ventures such as Will Aid. Boyd Rice have obviously taken an interest in cycling and sponsored that. The more cynical amongst you may dislike when firms do this and see it as a cheap marketing ploy. We can vouch that not all firms do it for 'PR'. Many firms we know do far more charitable work than they post on their website, and even then they only post it to help raise general awareness.



A quick word on navigation as the web address is trickier than you might think. We link to the official .com version above but at the moment www.boydricesolicitors.co.uk also redirects you there. People are unlikely to mis-spell Boyd in the same way they do Lloyd, but neither www.boydrice.com or www.boydrice.co.uk exist. With so many variations possible such as using the singular "solicitor", their old Boyd Rice & Co company name or even Boyd & Rice simply because so many law firms use an "&" or "+" - it's probably still a good idea to bookmark the site once you're on it. Especially with the amount of property scams still going. Remember that no solicitor should contact you about paying money or bank details via email.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Boyd Rice Solicitors Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.boydricesolicitors.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
