Jacobs Law Solicitors: Review

Obviously the fact we've written hundreds of in depth review articles on UK law firms should be evidence enough that we haven't personally used each and every one of them for a legal matter. If we did need that much legal help so often, then there would be something so seriously wrong with us that you shouldn't listen to a work we say anyway.

What we do offer that's quite unique (and hopefully therefore quite helpful amongst a sea of online commentary) is our experience and expertise at having worked within the legal industry for more than twenty years. Which also means having worked with thousands of professionals within that industry during that time. That's why we can often point out things the average consumer wouldn't notice or consider. For example:

"Established in 2013, Jacobs Law Solicitors specialise in advising and supporting individuals, small companies and multi-nationals in the UK."

Jacobs Law Solicitors

This may seem like a standard opener on the Jacobs Law website, but to us it shows a firm with a modern mindset. That's because "established in 2013" can sound ridiculously new to some considering so many solicitors quote centuries-old founding dates. The practice of claiming an "established in 1881" foundation is something common to such professional areas including law, accounting, and journalism. However for all three - they're quite meaningless.

The obvious idea they try to stick in your head is that the longer a firm had been established, the more experience must be within the firm. But that's simply not true. You can get a 1-year-qualified solicitors handling your case at a 200-year-old firm. You can get a 40-year-expert lawyer at a 1-year-old newly set up brand where the paint on the walls is still wet. There are no 200-year-old solicitors sitting behind desks at these anciently established firms imparting guru knowledge to the rest of the staff.

So for Jacobs to be unafraid in posting such a "new" start date in the face of such an "old" industry - well that really stands out to us as genuinely being a modern day law office.

"Based in the heart of Birmingham’s City Centre, we offer a unique and exciting new approach to our areas of expertise."

If you've already skimmed through dozens of other law firm's sites today, probably 9 times out of 10 you'll have seen them state they are a "modern" firm - without anything to qualify or even explain what that means. For all we know, that could mean they know what email is. There are many other overly used marketing terms such as "friendly", "traditional", and everything being of "paramount" importance. There are things we absolutely would consider make a firm "modern" and having an online booking form like Jacobs Law do is certainly one of them.

One thing we're very keen on is firms having profile pages of their staff including a photo, name, and case types covered. Some go too far such as listing favourite colours. But Jacobs Law cover the important bits only and even include direct contact information for every lawyer too. You'd think that would be a universal trait by now, but it's not. A different firm we reviewed yesterday had several online complaints about spending most of their time talking to their solicitor's secretary. So having direct contact details for every lawyer at the firm listed on their site is a thankfully growing trend - but by no means common.

"Our lawyers are friendly and approachable, an important trait when dealing with client matters."

Again, this is something practically every law firm will say. It's not as though any would say the opposite either. So that makes it less helpful in distinguishing between firms when you're weighing up the pros and cons. A really good resource we constantly advocate is your local Law Society. This firm is registered with The Law Society of England & Wales which is the best we've seen with a huge amount of user-side data being shown.

A great feature is being able to see the qualification dates of any solicitor at a firm. That way when you see statements about a firm having decades of experience - you can make sure that's not just one person at the firm hogging it all. If you flick through the data for Jacob's, you'll see they have solicitors from almost every decade over the last four of them. There are 10 solicitors at the firm at time of writing with Noel Lee having qualified in 1997, William Cheung in 2005, Ahmed Yousafzai in 2011, and more - right up to Sarah Khan in 2021.

A good mix of seasoned and fresh, experienced and enthusiastic - and that can't possibly be a bad thing. You can also see what each solicitor specialises in. However Jacobs has already provided this information on the website. e.g. "Asead Yakoob; Specialising in Conveyancing", "Akhmed Yakoob; Specialising in Criminal Law", or "Mohammed Tabraiz; Specialising in Personal Injury". Again, you would think this to be common practice amongst all firms. But it's not.

"Wherever we are, we operate in accordance with our ethical business principles of quality, unity and integrity."

Neatly brings us to notes on navigation, as there are a few things to watch for here. We link to the official site for this firm which is www.jacobslaw.org, and not a standard tld ending for a law firm. However www.jacobslaw.co.uk is owned by a different firm (not an existing legal practice) and www.jacobslaw.com is owned by a law office in the USA. There are dozens of alternates to try such as jacobslawsolicitors.org no to mention tld variants of those and even hyphens mixed in too.

There are other lawyers in the UK using Jacob in the name. www.jacobs-law.co.uk (for Jacobs & Co Solicitors) shows up high in the search results and has a similar domain. So it may be an idea to bookmark the correct site once you're on it.

If you are looking for help with a property matter, this sort of online care is even more important due to a long-term scamming technique of getting clients buying/selling a property to deposit money into fraudulent bank accounts. This is done through phishing (similar looking domain names) or even the full on hacking of solicitor's contact lists and emailing clients directly. Never discuss payments or bank details via email.

"We pride ourselves on offering our clients the very best advice in specific areas of expertise. We know what we do best ..."

Coming back to similar names, this also means if you want to see reviews of the firm you need to be very careful what terms you use. Entering the full firm name plus location is usually necessary to make sure you see comments about the correct company online. In this instance that's "Jacobs Law Solicitors Birmingham".

"worked tirelessly in what turned out to be a very complicated sale"

"we felt supported and informed throughout the whole process"

"provided me with regular updates and were very professional"

"dealt with my case in a timely and appropriate manner"

These snippets from the third party reviews sites out there (Trustpilot, Google, Yelp, etc.) are all very positive. That's unusual though because the majority of Conveyancing firms in the UK have terrible reviews. The largest property firm in England/Wales currently has a rating of just under 3 stars on Google with over 1,000 reviews. Sadly buying or selling a house in England/Wales is fraught with risks/delays and despite it often being completely out of the solicitor's hands - they will get blamed. So seeing such a huge amount of highly positive reviews about a Conveyancer is almost the stuff of Twilight Zones.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Jacobs Law Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.jacobslaw.org), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
