WH Law Ltd - Immigration Solicitors in Woking: Review
Normally our articles use a specific law firm to highlight a point or explain a resource you can use when researching various types of firm, or legal professionals that deal in specific areas of law. However today's law practice, WH Solicitors, is simple. It's one of those ones that make us use tired out sayings such as 'does what it says on the tin'. It may be a phrase we dislike resorting to, but it fits.
The reason for this is that this firm focuses on one particular area. That's good. Especially for certain case types such as Divorce, Criminal Law, Motoring Offences, Conveyancing, and Immigration - the latter of which is what the firm clearly handles.
That's not to dismiss larger firms with multiple specialists on board. There are firms out there that say 'we specialise in xyz' and list a massive number of areas of law. That is not always an incorrect use of the word. If there is only one or two solicitors in the practice and they say they specialise in three dozen types of law - certainly be cautious. However if they have seven solicitors and list seven specialist areas of law - that is still a very good choice to go for.
This second quote from the firm's own website highlights why some areas of law require a specialist that pretty much eats, sleeps, and drinks their craft. Immigration is constantly changing, increasingly complicated, time limited, and not something you get quick second chances at.
But not all specialists are the same. It's not enough to just say you are a specialist. The amount of expertise and experience is a huge factor in selecting a firm. Does WH Solicitors have that? The easiest way to check on a firm is to use The Law Society of England & Wales website for firms in those countries. We've long praised this organisation's consumer offering over the years. It's a far better provided resource than its counterparts in other parts of the UK, unfortunately. (And that's tough to say living in one of them!)
If you check the page for any firm you'll be able to see all names the company use, any alternate contact details, plus the expertise and qualification date of any solicitors at the firm. You can see for WH their main lawyer Waleed Hassan has been practising law since 2011. So full time at just immigration/asylum matters is decent enough to add up.
Does this translate into happy clients? Sadly for all solicitors, barristers, paralegals, and other legal practitioners across the UK there are not always a lot of public reviews to check out. Whilst many provide testimonials on their website, our poll a few years back indicated that only 9% of you trusted company-provided reviews. The main thing to remember is that a lack of reviews is not a negative sign. People are just often far less inclined to publicly discuss their divorce, bankruptcy, or brain injuries on comment boards than they about the pizza they had yesterday.
If you check through the main ports of call for most people such as Google, Facebook, Yelp, Trustpilot, Yell, etc. you'll usually be able to pick up enough bits and pieces. Just remember to read all comments and not rely on average star ratings. We've seen law firms praised for their innovative menu and criminal law specialists rated one star for refusing a divorce case. The number of reviews that are for the completely wrong firm (which we'll cover in an moment) are just ridiculous.
"The outcome was very positive. The home office granted the application."
"I am flying to UK on 1st Feb to see my children after a gap of 3 years!"
"Can't describe how grateful I am for all his help in making my application for a Spouse Visa successful."
These snippets are typical of the ones we saw. They are all very positive, mention Waleed by name and often discussed what the case was for. A quick note on navigation should be made though because when looking up reviews on the public forums we did end up on the wrong pages sometimes. The firm's official website is www.whsolicitors.co.uk but www.whsolicitors.com is for a completely different firm.
Also whilst the branding and page content focuses on the name 'WH Solicitors' the Law Society listing and some review sites list them as 'WH Law'. (Note that www.whlaw.co.uk and other variants are all either owned by someone else or not at all.) Searching for that name instead brings up several related firms in search results. Plus Google sometimes only returns reviews for a firm if you put in a location so you'd need the full 'wh solicitors woking'.
This is mostly important to remember due to the phishing scams still going about. But typically the fraudsters targeting law firm clients are only after property matters due to the huge deposits they manage to trick people into paying into the wrong account. Sometimes based on nothing more than a single official-looking email saying to do so. Make sure you're on the correct site and only call/answer numbers you know in relation to your case.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with WH Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.whsolicitors.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
