Atkinson Rose Employment Law Solicitors based in London: Review

Atkinson Rose deal with Employment issues and are one of the many specialist firms we've sought out for the 1to1Legal network. When it comes to things like motor offences, criminal defense, bankruptcy, and so on - people are always seeking specialists. Having a wide range of specific knowledge and plenty of experience seems to be paramount when dealing with your car, debts, and liberty. However we don't see the same priority given to Employment issues for some reason. Considering how much of our lives revolve around work - that's a curious thing.

First let's look at who you get from this particular specialist employment firm. Obviously the solicitors themselves are the key, so we'll start with the Managing Partner - Amit Patel. His bio on the firm's website explains the experience he's gained in various large and small law firms during the 10+ years since qualifying as a solicitor. It also states his "... real world business experience from a number of sectors", that he "... holds degrees in biomedical science, law and employment law" not to mention his "...charity work representing victims of human trafficking and slavery ..."

The other staff described on the website's 'Our Team' page are no less impressive in the unique experiences enjoyed prior to joining Atkinson Rose's setup. Some are directly relevant such as having worked in-house for British Airways as an advisor on employee matters or advising on contract matters at Western Union. Some are not so directly relevant but simply give an impression of the type of people they are, such as writing articles for the rightsinfo.org website or speaking three different languages.

Second, are there any features offered by specialists that you tend not to see elsewhere? Well, having crawled my way through hundreds of law firm websites during the two decades I've been doing this - the fact they actually have news in their 'News' section is actually quite unusual. Most firms leave this blank or use it as just another space to write nice things about themselves. The Atkinson Rose news page currently has real editorial pieces about actual Employment Law matters. To me, this shows the firm's genuine interest in not just following the industry changes, but also mulling over any possible future implications.

They obviously have their own list of features they consider to be special, such as providing "one dedicated point of contact" within the firm so that the person you speak to always knows what you're talking about when you call. They also state:

"We charge fair, reasonable rates or act on a NO WIN NO FEE basis where possible ... we offer a free legal assessment call with a qualified lawyer to anyone with a legal concern at work." (sic)

Lastly, do they win more cases than non-specialist firms? This is a question people often ask us through our social feeds and by email about various firms on our network. One thing you need to remember though, is that specialists probably take on a lot of cases that other firms considered either too difficult to pursue or unlikely to succeed. Therefore success rates can't be compared directly.

One thing we would recommend is reading Atkinson Rose's Recent Case Page, which details several cases, their outcomes, and usually a review by the client. This one caught our eye especially:

"Our client was on a work trip abroad where her manager acted in a sexually inappropriate manner with her and another following the consumption of alcohol. Both employees resigned and our firm represented one whilst the other used a different firm. We bought claims for sex harassment and entered into bullish negotiations for a sum without the need for a tribunal hearing. Eventually our client settled for more than 3 times the amount that the other employee settled the claim for despite the circumstances surrounding the resignations being identical."

I'll leave it there for now, but just a quick word on navigation - we link to www.atkinson-rose.co.uk which seems to be the only live site available. The straight variant www.atkinson-rose.com displays nothing, neither do the two non-hyphenated versions www.atkinsonrose.co.uk or www.atkinsonrose.com so it's probably best to bookmark the site once you're on it to make sure you always come back to the correct place. I don't know if you've seen our recent posts, but there have been a lot of fake emails from solicitors going around. They are usually to try and scam you out of property money, but you never know what they're going to think of next. Also, just to confirm - yes this is the same firm that we use to list as being in Wembley, Middlesex. They've just moved.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Atkinson Rose Solicitors LLP it's best to visit the website (www.atkinson-rose.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
