ACSL Solicitors Ltd in Liverpool: Review

We've been working in the legal industry for over 20 years now, just about to celebrate (a loose use of the word) our 25th year in the business. So if anyone knows about law firm's websites, we're surely in that list. If you've just finished flicking through a dozen of them before arriving here you'll no doubt have already worked out they all seem to say very similar things.

"We use plain and simple English - so you know exactly what is happening and why."

This statement is taken from the website of ACSL solicitors in Liverpool but it could be from any firm's website really. Other common sales phrases many use include 'we are a modern firm', 'friendly staff', and 'very experienced'. All of these statements sound great. But they are also quite useless in helping you distinguish one firm from another. Unless there is a firm out there saying the like to use 'complicated English', are 'out of date', 'unfriendly', or 'inexperienced' - then this sort of information has not helped.

ACSL Solicitors Ltd

"We are transparent about our prices – they're all listed here on the website."

These sorts of statements are not always placed front and centre, but they are the type of thing to watch for. Absolutely, a firm that indicates potential pricing on their site is showing a level of transparency rather than just claiming to have such. That's a big plus in our opinion and rarer than you might think. Even for property sales firms.

"ACSL Solicitors launched in 2009. We are a team of closely knit legal professionals who all enjoy our jobs every single day."

There are many firms out there claiming foundation dates going right back to the 1800s. So you may look at this firm's claim of starting in 2009 as indicating much less experience. However, that is not the case. If firm says they have been established for over 150 years for example, that doesn't mean there is a 150 year old guru solicitor sitting behind the desk running everything. You can easily end up with a 1-year qualified solicitor from a 150-year-old firm.

So how can you tell the actual experience levels within a firm if founding dates are meaningless? That's actually quite easy if you live in England and Wales. We have often championed the website of The Law Society of those two countries for providing a wealth of information to consumers. If you check out the page for any firm they will show you alternate trading names, all office locations, languages spoken, and more. Most importantly they will show the areas of law and qualification dates of each lawyer within the firm. For ACSL it shows Peter Skinner as having qualified back in 1985, Gina Stanton in 1992, and Joseph Mulrooney in 2009. That's nearly a century of experience between them.

"Whenever we act for you we will provide you with a 'no fuss' service."

Of course all firms are going to claim being friendly and providing a simple no fuss service. While many will offer customer testimonials on their website, the overwhelming majority prefer to get their client feedback from the independent forums such as Google, Trustpilot and Facebook.

"All went smoothly and they kept me informed at each stage"
"They saved me money along the way too"
"professional and helpful"
"Communication was great throughout"

The majority of comments on the public forums are like these snippets - very positive. We did see a few negative comments but they were unclear and the firm has commented the name and description of the case doesn't match any of their past clients.

We know this does happen alot with property matters, where clients of the other side start leaving negative messages about the buyer/seller's solicitor. We've also seen a negative review of a criminal law firm because they refused to take on the person's divorce case. So when it comes to legal services you really need to actually read the comments rather than flick through just the star ratings in order to get the full picture.

There are other sources you can use to get background information. Some firms are registered with their local law society as well. Some firms provide staff profile pages which we think aren't just a good side offering, but essential these days. ACSL does have such a page on their website. They also seem to have a genuine help article section with everything from basic 'We're Selling a property - how does it work?' pieces to more in depth 'what is causation in an RTA?'. Little things like these can show a firm really interested in it's work, the people coming through their site, and that 'transparency' many claim to strive for.

"you will never be left feeling uninformed and we respond promptly to each stage of your file"

A quick note on navigation as you'll have seen from above that the official site uses the atypical tld www.acsl.org.uk rather than www.acsl.co.uk or .com (both of which take you to other firms). No variants we tried such as www.acslsolicitors.co.uk worked either. This sort of thing is hugely important these days especially if you're using a law firm for a property matter.

Thousands of people each year end up handing large sums of money to scammers, sometimes their entire house deposit, simply by not paying attention to basic safety precautions. Always make sure you are on the correct website and never discuss payment details via email.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with ACSL Solicitors Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.acsl.org.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
