Bradford & Son Solicitors in Rotherham, South Yorkshire: Review

We were actually introduced to Bradford & Son because we knew someone who went to work with them. Having been in the legal industry for over 20 years now, we're acquainted with hundreds of firms around the country and at least 'aware' of hundreds more. Usually if we haven't heard of a firm, it's because they're quite new.

Certainly if you search the web for "Bradford & Son solicitors" there are no press releases, no quotes in local news articles, no advertisement videos on YouTube, etc. and only a handful of reviews dotted around the place. Everything you'd expect from a brand new firm that had just set up. However they state an establishment date of 1885 and their two main partners have more than half a century of experience between them.

If you've read some of our other articles, you've probably seen me whinge considerably about law firms that think they need to Tweet about everything, have staff profiles talking about favourite colours or pet names, as well as constantly holding costume-themed-charity-launch-funrun-events every month in order to 'engage with the public'.

Bradford & Son Solicitors

So what do we think of a firm that doesn't seem to do any of that? Well, pretty amazed actually. Relying heavily on repeat business and word of mouth recommendations from clients is hard work and requires years of solid top-notch services. Usually only very niche firms can pull it off.

"Quite simply, we are a firm that likes to help others."

You may not be aware but all the changes over the past few decades such as the birth of the internet, changes to legal aid, direct access to barristers and so on - have made the legal industry a ridiculously competitive place. Since the financial crisis, an average of 1000 law firms a year have been closing their doors. Huge brand names have gone bankrupt. This is great for consumers who are getting much better deals/service. Plus far more people have access to good legal help. Before all this, those that couldn't afford a solicitor had to rely on the Citizens Advice Bureau which was and still is utterly abysmal.

A firm that is managing to flourish without bandwagoning into over-the-top social media accounts or posting sales pitches thinly disguised as news articles all over the web (you know who you are) - must have something special. Let's start with those two partners I mentioned before.

Chris Auburn is a Partner & Solicitor with 30 years invested in the firm. He specialises in Conveyancing, Powers of Attorney, Court of Protection, Wills, Probate and Trusts. Richard Staton is the other Partner & Solicitor with 20 years' experience focusing on Commercial Litigation, Property Matters and Personal Injury.

Again, I can't tell you how nice it is to read staff profiles that provide such concise and useful information. Do you care what your solicitor's favourite food is? Just why so many law firms suddenly decided to inform potential customers of their staff's hobbies is beyond me.

"There is no legal practice that matches Bradford & Son - thank you."
"Thank you for all your help and support during the sale of my mum's bungalow"
"We just wanted to say a massive thank you for all your help"

Yes, these review snippets from Bradford and Son's website do look slightly copy/pasted from the same template every other firm get their testimonials from. Whilst I'm sure these are quite genuine, they don't stand out. There are others around the web such as:

"thank u for your help and advice today with my problem. I highly recommend Bradford and son as they provide a grate service"
"I am currently going through medical negligence issue with Nicola Smith and she is incredible!"
"I have used this practise for many years. I have always found them to be extremely thorough."

Any downsides we spotted with the firm? Well, we didn't like seeing this sentence on their site:

"If you require any advice from Richard, please do not hesitate to contact him or one of his secretaries"

It's not often you see secretaries (plural) in that sentence. Until you actually use a firm though, you have no idea whether the solicitor has more than one secretary because they keep a huge workload on the go - or if they simply prefer having someone else deal with clients. There were two negative reviews on the web that we saw, and both mentioned this as a concern.

So does that mean you'll rarely get to speak to your actual solicitor? No. As I said at the start, we know someone there and if you read the reviews you'll see far more positive comments about how well-engaged their solicitor was vs. the two comments that say they felt pushed off onto junior staff/PAs. Please note though, that whilst having a solicitor who's willing to talk to you on the phone for hours answering the most mundane and basic questions might make you feel like you're getting an excellent 'customer service experience' - we would always recommend using a solicitor who didn't have so much free time on his hands.

Even if you don't use any of the firms we review or recommend on this site, we hope that from reading the things we explore you'll get a better understanding of what's useful when it comes to choosing a solicitor and how to navigate the plethora of review sites and the reviews themselves.

"We are proud to provide a personal, high quality and efficient service to both commercial and personal clients. Timely, solid and reliable advice when you need it."

Again, we're really impressed with this firm. Their website contains loads of real and useful information rather than dozens of sales speeches. We didn't see an ounce of newspeak or faux trendiness. The staff profiles are concise and the staff themselves are all well experienced with their own skill-sets and specialities.

We need to make a quick note on navigation due to the name as there are no special characters allowed in website names. So www.bradford&son.co.uk or www.bradford&son.com will never exist. It's only one "son" too so www.bradfordandsons.com is actually a totally different company and www.bradfordandsons.co.uk doesn't exist. Also the www.bradfordandson.com version doesn't seem to be owned by the firm so it is only the main "and" and ".co.uk" version for the official site we're linking to from this page. There doesn't seem to be a host of other similarly named firms though, so you can get to them via search engines quite easily. However there have been a huge number of scams the past few years for property matters. People faking being the client's solicitor and stating the bank details for their deposits have changed and so on. Obviously using similar looking website names is one of the tricks they use so make sure to pay attention with both emails and the website you're on.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Bradford & Son Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.bradfordandson.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
