JPS Walker Solicitors Ltd in Manchester: Review
Rather than delve into a few specific topics at length, today's article will try to cover a much wider range of points. That means each will only be covered very briefly, but hopefully it will provide a greater selection of things that might help when trying to decide between the various law firms available for your case.
For this we'll be using the website of JPS Walker Solicitors as our example. If you've been through several law firm websites already today trying to find one you think might be best for your issue, you'll probably have noticed that many of them use the same sort of language and imagery. This can make spotting differences between them to evaluate very difficult. But sometimes the clues are in what initially might seem common, almost mundane statements.
Most legal practices will make some sort of claim like this. Some go really overboard trying to claim ancient founding dates such as 'established in 1771'. JPS Walker doesn't go that far, but the numbers used by each firm may not always be based on the same measurement. For example, if you sometimes check the companies house website looking to verify the status of a Limited company, you'll see that JPS Walker Solicitors Ltd was created in 2016. That date however is simply when that particular name started to be used. Prior to this date the law firm was called JPS Legal Ltd.
Often the number of years a firm quotes in such statements doesn't relate to the years of experience their solicitors have either. One of the best resources we always recommend people use when researching law offices and solicitors is any available local law society website. These can be city, county, or country based. JPS are registered with The Law Society of England & Wales which is the best out of such organisations for user-side data. You can find alternate trading names used, all office locations, languages spoken within the firm, case specialties, and even the qualification dates of solicitors at each firm.
If you check out the page for JPS Walker, you'll see the longest serving solicitor (Michael Tattersall-Walker) qualified in 2009. So there is definitely experience within the firm, and even better as he seems to have focused on a single area of law rather than trying to be a 'jack of all trades' solicitor. Doing that should always help create a better representative for you in litigative matters. But that also means the quote about '30 years' on the firm's website most likely relates to how long the firm's name has been running. It's a distinction we feel people should certainly be aware of in order to compare firms more effectively.
Again these statements from the JPS Walker website are types which practically every firm will make. But there is actually much more to unpack there than you might think:
Most firms will state they are 'modern', 'friendly, 'experienced', etc. which sounds great. But if every firm is claiming such, then it's not much use to potential clients as a distinguishing feature. Especially when you consider no firm is going to claim the opposite (i.e. that they are 'living in the past', 'unfriendly', or 'inexperience'). So what can set one firm apart from another?
Most Personal Injury matters such as Road Accidents, Work Injuries, Slip/Trips, and so on come under the same law title of 'Litigation'. So despite there being a long list of types of injuries, covering them all still counts as a specialised area of law. More and more people are becoming aware of just how much of a difference a specialist can make to a case.
Only a few decades ago people were pretty much restricted to using their local high street solicitor for everything from Divorce, to Injury Claims, Will Making, and even selling their House. These days with the internet people can instead search for the best representation for their particular issue from firms all over the country. This competition has really benefited clients in ensuring firms really buckle down and excel in a certain area.
The first resource people normally turn to when researching any service provider are prior customer reviews. JPS Walker Solicitors don't just provide regular testimonials on their website, they actually have a few case studies detailing the incident, an overview of the issues, and the outcome. We love case studies, but originally thought this was simply because we've been working in the industry for over twenty years. However we've recently discovered that case studies on a law firm's website go down very well with potential clients too.
"I am really satisfied with the work and outcome of the case."
Those are a couple of snippets from the firm's case studies relating to how those customers felt about the service. But when it comes to reviews people tend to prefer the public comment forums such as Google, Facebook, Trustpilot, Yelp, etc. Unfortunately, though, when it comes to law firms you will often find they don't receive as many reviews as other service providers. That's because whilst people are more than happy to jump online and let people know about their lovely waitress or great local car wash - they are far less likely to rush onto the internet and broadcast about their messy divorce, bankruptcy, or life-destroying accident.
So if you see a law firm with barely a handful, or even zero, reviews - don't take that as some sort of negative sign. It's really very common. We did find some reviews for JPS Walker:
"Great solicitors, professional, friendly"
"successfully managed to secure us damage cheques"
and the majority of them were definitely positive. But coming back to the original statement we're continuing to expand on:
This is another important statement to make sure you've read correctly on any law practice's website. To clarify: 'no win, no fee' and '100% compensation' do not mean the same thing. So if you see one written on a solicitor's site it does not mean both are on offer. 100% compensation means there are no fees whether your case wins or loses. No win, no fee means there are no fees should your case lose.
The difference is that a solicitor may take a cut of your compensation under a no win, no fee guarantee. This is often referred to as a 'conditional fee' arrangement and will typically be around 25% of your settlement. In our opinion though, whether a solicitor does or does not take such a cut should never be a deal breaker when trying to decide which law firm to use. As a (ridiculously basic) example - it would obviously be better to use an expert lawyer who takes 25% of a hard won £5000 compensation win, than to use a less expert lawyer who takes 0% of a £2000 settlement. Again, a very rough example but to make a geniune point.
Obviously we think highly of JPS Walker Solicitors otherwise we wouldn't have added them to our database of searchable legal service providers. But hopefully this short exercise of deconstructing their site's language to try and point out some between-the-lines tips might help when you come to make your own decision about which law office is best for you.
A quick note on navigation. This firm focuses on litigation matters so there are far less risks involved when searching/contacting/dealing with them compared to something like conveyancing where there are a huge number of people falling victim to scams. The official website is currently www.jpswalker.co.uk but www.jpswalker.com does not redirect there. The firm does come up top for common variant searches such as 'jps and walker solicitors' or 'jps walker legal'. There are other firms with 'jps' in the name and therefore other websites too (e.g. www.jpslaw.co.uk which is a completely different firm). If you're someone with a less than perfect memory then, it's probably a good idea to bookmark the correct site for coming back to later.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with JPS Walker Solicitors Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.jpswalker.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
