KRS Estate Planning Ltd - Will & Probate Advice in Leicester: Review

Only just a couple of decades ago most people would expect to contact a high street solicitor for any legal issue and that those solicitors within the firm would have a wide range of expertise. These days though, it's clear people want specialists for everything.

Thanks to creation of the internet, law firms are able to select the case types they are good at and then find clients from further afield - rather than having to cater to their local population. This is a great benefit for clients as it means a better chance of getting legal help from someone with focused expertise and experience in your particular type of case.

There have also been many changes to the types of solutions people can have beyond 'solicitors'. The Direct Access scheme allows members of the public to hire barristers themselves rather than having to pay a solicitor who would then hire one for certain types of court work. There's also Alternative Business Structures (ABS) allowing companies to run law firms rather than it having to be actual solicitors. There are even options to resolve matters without using a solicitor at all such as Mediation in divorce proceedings.

KRS Estate Planning Ltd

"whilst everybody understands the importance of making a Will, statistics show that 2/3rds of us do not get around to preparing one"

All those changes and options we've just listed are great. But when it comes to Estate Planning there are some things to watch out for. At the time of writing this, there are still dozens of companies out there offering 'will writing services' at the most unbelievably basic level. In some cases these companies do as little as taking the will you've written yourself and simply keeping a record of it.

These options are obviously incredibly cheap compared to using a full on law firm. But they are not a cheaper version of the same service. You are only getting what you pay for. The quote above is from the website of KRS Estate Planning and we absolutely agree that making a will is something hugely important that many people leave far too late to sort. So how can you tell 'good low-cost help' from simply 'cheap help'?

"I have vast, hands-on experience dealing with a variety of Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection work."

Most Will and Probate company websites will make claims about having huge amounts of experience. One thing to watch for is the wording. In the quote above the amount of experience is being attached to the actual person you will be dealing with - i.e. "I" have a vast amount of experience. Whereas if a company says 'we have been helping people for over twenty years' that doesn't mean the person assigned to you will have twenty years' experience. It could be their first day on the job.

If you're a thorough background checker (and we're acutely aware that many of you are) you'll notice that KRS Estate Planning Ltd is listed with Companies House as having a start date in 2017. Dates on the companies house website though are only when a firm becomes a limited company. So since the owner of this firm states a solicitor background, we looked him up on the local Law Society website.

The Law Society of England & Wales has the best user-side offering we've seen from such organisations. They provide alternative trading names for each legal practice, case types handled, other office locations, languages spoken, and most usefully - the qualification dates of each solicitor registered with them. Kamlesh Ratilal Samji (the K.R.S. of the firm name) is listed as having qualified as a solicitor in 2001.

"As well as English, I can also offer advice in Gujarati and Hindi, both of which I am fluent in."

Hopefully from the information so far it should be clear why we were quite happy to add this firm to our database of legal service providers. KRS are focused on a specialist case range with their qualifications, expertise, and experience all validated through third party websites. But what do prior clients think of the firm?

"friendly, efficient and well informed"

"explained everything and more as I asked a lot of questions"

"Great advice and service from Kam"

Those snippets are from testimonials posted on the firm's website. As you would expect, all testimonials that companies post on their site are always 100% positive. Like most people though, we're more interested in any negative comments to see if there is a common theme to be aware of - such as poor communication, price switching, or clients being fobbed off to junior staff once signed up. (Those are some of the more common complaints we see about law firms in general on the web.)

"A very caring gentleman who took time out during his day to meet mum and I to sign the relevant paperwork"

"The process was quick, easy and stress free"

"Very approachable and nothing too much trouble"

"Everything was made easily explainable to my mom who is 96 years old"

These snippets are from the regular independent review forums such as Google, Yell.com, Trustpilot, Yelp, etc. where the majority are all like this and very positive. There are a few other things that stand out about this firm over others as well. Such as:

"I appreciate how busy people are ... I aim to offer home visits, and, where possible, evening and weekend appointments."

You would think in this day and age that legal services would have moved on from the 9-5, Mon-Fri rigid opening hours that dominated the legal industry for centuries. But no. Sadly, most law firms we've seen (and we've been reviewing them for over 20 years now) still do not work weekends. Some have forced themselves to stay open an extra half hour one day a week or to offer morning appointments every second Saturday - but on the whole, offers like this by KRS Estate Planning for out-of-hours appointments are rare.

A quick note on navigation as we're dealing with an acronymed company name and non-branded web address. The official site which we link to above is www.krsep.co.uk with www.krsep.com not redirecting there. There's obviously a massive range of variants people could attempt such as www.krs.co.uk or www.krsestateplanning.co.uk so we would recommend bookmarking the site just to be sure.

Most of the alternate searches we did such as 'krs wills' and 'krs probate' still brought up the correct firm. But be aware that Google still allows keyword matching in their ads with trademark protection protocols that can be very, very slow to pick up abuse. That could allow other firms and even clickbait sites (which we cover in this article) to be listed at the top of search results instead. As the firm we're talking about here deals exclusively in Estate Planning matters, this isn't as much of a concern. At the moment most scams in the law industry are aimed at property sales/purchases with fraudsters managing to convince people to send tens of thousands in house deposits to their bank accounts by simply emailing them saying their solicitor's bank details have changed. Why people fall for that, we don't really know.

One last quote from the firm's site that is a good point to remember:

"Choosing who to appoint is an important decision and best made by yourself and not left to the Courts."

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with KRS Estate Planning Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.krsep.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
