Ropewalk Chambers Direct Access Barristers in Nottingham: Review
As part of our mission to give people choice when seeking legal assistance, we've been slowly introducing barristers into the 1to1Legal search. Ropewalk Chambers is the latest to be included. These days, people are becoming more aware of their legal options and it is increasingly popular to engage a barrister for certain case types rather than going through a solicitor. For the benefits of such related to your own case, get on the phone.
As Ropewalk says on their website: "Members of the public, commercial and non-commercial organisations are able to engage a specialist barrister's services, including advocacy, on a Direct Access basis." There are usually cost and time savings from doing so.
Ropewalk state they will help people for a multitude of case types including animal and human rights based on the various acts protecting them, landlord and tenant problems, commercial and contractual disputes, licensing, contentious and non-contentious advisory work, nuisance and anti-social behaviour, disability discrimination acts, employment, title boundary and neighbour disputes, probate, inheritance, trusts and more. They can also help people facing investigations and tribunals from regulatory bodies over professional discipline and regulation issues.
Whilst this chambers has plenty of barristers that are registered to receive Direct Access instructions from clients, it is sometimes necessary to involve other local barristers, lawyers and solicitors. So make sure to ask if you have any questions about who they might use or the likelihood of that happening.
Do not panic about having to contact the right barrister and choose them before calling. Each chambers has clerks who know the law and know their members. That way, they can match you to the best person for your needs.
Ropewalk promise to clearly set out the likely costs before undertaking any discussed work. Obviously, not all the work required can be known ahead of time. It depends on the type of case and how well things go. Ropewalk Chambers cover many case types as we mentioned before, but they actively promote their services for case titles such as clinical negligence, commercial law, employment law, personal injury, housing, planning and environmental, as well as property and chancery.
From their main page: "By instructing us, you will receive more than just advice and representation; you will secure consistently excellent oral and written advocacy, delivered with the highest levels of service and integrity from barristers who provide objective advice, always independent and apolitical."
To back this statement up, they detail the work they do for Local Government departments. Their work for local authorities and other public bodies include advising and drafting across a range of statute and common law. They have dedicated Public Sector, Treasury Counsel and Not for Profit teams allowing them to provide expert assistance with anti-social behaviour, human rights, judicial reviews, community care, licensing, disabilities, property, public health, public liability claims, highways, personal injury, special needs, child abuse and housing.
This chambers had two Queens Counsel when we were checking through:
Patrick Limb QC specialises in disease and personal injury including clinical negligence work. He has a successful track record in group and multi-party actions causing him to be named in Chambers and Partners’ Spotlight Table nationally. He also likes to focus on cases involving the police, human rights and judicial reviews.
Jayne Adams QC has extensive experience in personal injury and clinical negligence as well. She also travels the country to litigate for disease and fraudulent claims issues. Jayne frequently lectures, particularly in the industrial disease field to solicitors and insurers.
The pair were involved in the high profile Supreme Court case of Zurich vs Hayward. Jayne Adams QC was the junior counsel when it started back in May 2001. Patrick Limb QC joined in for the first Court of Appeal decision nearly ten years later in the Supreme Court. Apparently a very unusual personal injury case which will undoubtedly shape decisions regarding personal injury actions involving fraud for some time to come.
The chambers themselves underwent extensive refurbishment in 2010 to improve client facilities. They now have six conference rooms, a seminar theatre for over forty attendees, all with Wi-Fi and video-conferencing. They've also taken great steps to improve services for those with disabilities, including induction loops, level access and blue badge parking.
Obviously we checked out the website variants for you, and sadly most such as www.ropewalk.com, www.ropewalkchambers.co.uk and www.ropewalkchambers.com all seem to be owned by other firms. Therefore we definitely recommend bookmarking the correct one once you know you are on their to save errors later. Thankfully, whilst this firm has decided to do without the www. on their web address, they have at least had to the foresight to redirect all www.ropewalk.co.uk entries to the non-www version.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Ropewalk Chambers it's best to visit the website (www.ropewalk.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
