Not sure whether you need a legal professional? Most law firms will offer at least a free phone call to discuss your needs and you should be offered impartial advice as to whether hiring a law firm is required. Always ask to speak to a qualified individual though before relaying the more in-depth details of the case. Don't be afraid to ring round and ask several firms about free consultations to try and get a better idea before deciding how to proceed or who with.

Most countries in this category are common law countries, though France, a civil law country, merged its jurists in 1990 and 1991 in response to Anglo-American competition. The only disadvantage is that attorneys cannot draw up public instruments that have the same force of law as notarial acts. Notably, barristers in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and some states in Australia do not work in "law firms". are now home to several firms with more than 1,000 lawyers after a wave of mergers in the late 1990s. The Law Society remains the representative body for solicitors. There is also a Solicitor General for Scotland, who is the deputy of the Lord Advocate. All barristers who have not been called to the Inner Bar are known as Junior Counsel (and are idenitifed by the postnominal initials "BL"), regardless of age or experience. There are also many non-legal jobs for which legal training is good preparation, such as politician, corporate executive, government administrator, investment banker, entrepreneur, or journalist.

The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom was created by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005. Almost all criminal proceedings start at a magistrates' court. The vast majority of offences are also concluded in a magistrates' court (over 90% of cases). In Western Australia, wigs are no longer worn in any court. Solicitors in England and Wales who wish to practise must pay an annual fee to obtain a practising certificate. The Official Solicitor has two main functions. Usually they use briefs of professional clients, solicitors, and accountants. In some civil law countries this responsibility is handled by civil law notaries. In this manner the Bar Council of India also ensures the standard of education required for practising in India is met with. The procedure followed may either be solemn procedure, where the Sheriff sits with a jury of fifteen; or summary procedure, where the sheriff sits alone in a bench trial.

Heraldry is regulated in Scotland both by the civil and criminal law, with prosecutions taken before the Court of the Lord Lyon. In Pakistan, the term "Advocate" is used instead of lawyer in The Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils Act, 1973. Where these tribunals make an adjudication in Scotland they are subject to the oversight and ultimate authority of the Court of Session, which can review decisions through either a final appeal or through judicial review. In some countries, there is external regulation.
