Catteralls Solicitors in Wakefield: Review
There are so many typical high-street-looking types of law firms around these days it can be hard to find differences between them in order to make a more informed decision about which is best for your particular case. More importantly, which solicitors are actually well established with experience in your matter.
Whilst getting on with your solicitor and feeling like they genuinely care about you will often be the ultimate final deal breaker, there is a lot of research you can perform to narrow down the number of firms you end up calling to begin with. Spending all day on the phone repeating the same (often upsetting) story to several solicitors is not ideal.
Sadly many law firms use more marketing jargon on their websites rather than clear information about what makes them different. We're not a fan of is this idea of ancient establishment dates because it can so easily be misleading. For example, one firm we've written about previously claims a 150-year-history in the area simply because they moved into a building that was occupied by a much older firm initially. No seriously. They stated as such on their about us page.
In our opinion, long term existence of a firm's brand is not nearly as important as the experience and expertise of the individual solicitor you are going to work with. In all honesty, no legal practice has a 200+ year old solicitor sitting behind a desk issuing sage advice. You are just as likely to get a one year qualified newbie solicitor from a one hundred year old practice as you are to get a twenty year well-seasoned solicitor from a one year old law firm brand.
These sorts of statements are the ones we usually advise people to pay close attention to as they can be quite easy to check up on and quite revealing. Most law firms are signed up with a law society whether national, countywide or even city based if there is a large enough population. Catteralls are signed up with The Law Society of England & Wales which is great because they have a fantastic website full of consumer information on firms.
If you check out the page for this firm on there you'll see details of alternative contacts, various offices, staff information, languages spoken, and qualification dates of the legal professionals within. You'll note that they have solicitors that have qualified in every decade from the past 40 years including Philip Lisle who qualified in 1981, Julie Burgess (1996), Rebecca Baker (2005), right up to Danielle Knee with the relatively 'green' 2011 in comparison.
Having the experience is certainly a huge plus, but does that translate into good customer service for this firm? Like many companies in the legal industry and the majority of others - Catteralls have place some testimonials across their website.
"Extremely friendly, efficient and courteous at all times"
"We have dealt with Catteralls over the last 20 years on several occasions and have always had expert service"
However according to our poll a few years back, most consumers are very wary of these company-selected and therefore company-screened testimonials pages. Potential clients tend to rely more on the independent public offerings such as Google Reviews, Trustpilot, Yell, Yelp etc. If you look up reviews for Catteralls though on the third party sites, they also reflect the same very positive sentiments:
"very patient with my questions"
"Excellent advice, genuinely care about their clients welfare"
The theme of all these commentators discussing the firm's friendliness and customer care is not due to careful selection by us. These are random snippets across a wide range of reviewers, most of whom decided that was the main feature they wanted to comment on. That's surely a very good sign.
A quick note on navigation as we've seen a few common errors popping up in the site search now that Catteralls have been with us for a while. The official site we link to above is www.catteralls.co.uk but note that www.catteralls.com does not redirect you there. The most common errors of www.catterall.co.uk, www.catterallsolicitors.co.uk, and to a lesser extent the dot coms as well are all owned by other companies too.
At the moment nearly every search variant we tried such as 'cateralls solicitors' or 'catterals solicitors' still brought up the correct firm. That's great. The brand seems to be quite unique and therefore should be easy to find each time you want to come back to it. We did see the name 'Catterall Pell & Moxon' popping up, a branding that no longer operates. But the reason we point out how easy it is to get mixed up is because this firm deal with Property/Conveyancing matters which have been the increasing target of scammers for years now
Thousands of people have lost millions of pounds to these fraudsters. Sometimes over something as simple as receiving some official-looking emails stating they should pay their huge house deposit into a different bank account. Never discuss bank details via email and just try to keep aware of which website you are on. A last word from Catterall's own site:
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Catteralls Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.catteralls.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
