Fieldfisher LLP Personal Injury Solicitors in Manchester & London: Review

If you've used our site before to find legal help in your area, or if you've simply read through a few of our review articles - you'll have noticed that we tend to recommend and discuss firms that are apart from the typical high street offering. Whether they are unbelievably niche in their target area of law or excel in a certain aspect such as customer service, we find the types of firms you often might not find on your own.

It may therefore come as a surprise that we have added Fieldfisher Llp to that list considering they seem like a 'common' large law firm. Such firms we often say can lose that personal touch and reduce complaints from unhappy clients to mere collateral damage, rather than a serious blot on their reputation.

"We are one of the UK's leading personal injury, medical negligence and asbestos compensation claims solicitors."

Fieldfisher LLP

This statement amongst others we'll point out below is why we decided Fieldfisher were genuinely different from other large firms. And by large we mean, well, large. They have over 400 solicitors on staff in 11 offices across the UK, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Germany and America. Not only that, they even have their own Wikipedia page.

Normally when a firm gets that big, they move into practically every area of law and push out smaller clients in favour of big corporate clients. For this firm to have individual offices within the UK that have remained focused on a relatively small target group and one that can bring just regular smaller (again, relatively) claimants alongside larger ones - is unusual.

"We are renowned for our expertise in handling mesothelioma and other asbestos related disease claims."

Luckily, some of the firm's offices are in England which puts them under The Law Society of England & Wales. There are various such organisations but this one has the best website in our opinion due to the scope and reliability of the data they provide user-side.

If you visit the page for the firm's Manchester office for example you can find links to alternative contact details, language specialties, areas of expertise, and qualification dates for solicitors registered with the firm. You'll see Fieldfisher have lawyers from each of the past four decades including Ian Austin (qualified in 1986), Bridget Collier (1997), Mark Greenhalgh (2008, and Jonathon Bell (2017). A very encouraging mix of experience alongside new blood eager to prove themselves.

"For more than 30 years, we have helped thousands of people recover compensation for their injuries and illnesses."

This is something you'll see on most firm's sites. But does the length of time a firm has been operating translate into happy clients? The firm provides an extensive list of case studies which is something we certainly enjoy as part of our research into a firm. But according to our poll last year, many members of the public also find them useful in helping judge the quality, experience and establishment of a firm when looking to choose one for their own case.

Establishment is something different in the minds of various people. For some, just seeing the "more than 30 years" will help. For others, they like to see newspaper snippets about the firm helping in the local community or being asked their opinion for an article. One thing most people agree on is that seeing 'established in 1881' or some such ancient date proudly stamped across a firm's website - no longer provides much sway. So what are people saying about the actual service on public boards?

"not just another legal practice"

"both courteous and efficient"

"outcome has been highly successful every time"

"have always provided excellent advice and service"

These clips were gathered from the usual suspects such as Google, Yelp, Yell.com and TrustPilot. The majority are positive. However, there was a weird selection of negative comments spanning a one month period on one of the independent review sites. They didn't provide any specifics other than to state something such as having been dealt with 'rudely'. Even more odd was the comment about them having 'very understanding traffic wardens'.

We therefore think there may be some confusion with the firm's name when people are searching to leave reviews. Possibly a shopping centre from the sounds of it, as there are plenty around the UK with 'field' and 'fish' in the name. So on this occasion we would suggest ignoring any comments (positive or negative) that don't come with accompanying comments that clearly appear to be about reviewing a law firm.

"We offer free legal advice and take on claims on a 'no win no fee' basis."

On this we just want to point out that every single personal injury solicitor across the UK should take such cases on under the no win, no fee. This is not an offer unique to Fieldfisher or firms that state such on their website. It's pretty much a universal given at this point. However, this is not to be confused with the 100% compensation guarantee some firms offer. No win no fee just means that if you LOSE there will be no fees. 100% compensation guaranteed means there will be no fees if you WIN either.

One thing that is definitely different with Fieldfisher's website content though, is the fact that they don't just say they are 'award-winning' then quickly skip on to the next sales pitch without actually stating what the win was for. For all we know, it could have been an award for best logo design. But Fieldfisher actually list their achievements with links including Legal Business Awards 'Law Firm of the Year', Solicitors Journal 'Personal Injury Firm of the Year', and a 'Top Tier Rank' in the Legal 500.

A quick note on navigation as always. The main site we link to above is www.fieldfisher.com with www.fieldfisher.co.uk redirecting you there. As there are no extra generic terms such as 'fieldfisher law' or 'fieldfisher legal' to cause confusion, and with most people being able to get the i and the e in the correct order (as the defunct i before e rule only impedes words with a c in them) - we don't expect there to be many issues.

The firm has merged with others over the years including Martineau and Reid, Waterhouse & Co, Allison & Humphreys, etc. as well as having changed from Field Fisher & Co to Field Fisher and then finally Fieldfisher. However these are sufficiently in the past to avoid anyone still mixing them up.

"At Fieldfisher we cater for clients with complex, difficult and high value personal injury, medical negligence and asbestos claims."

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Fieldfisher LLP it's best to visit the website (www.fieldfisher.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
