QualitySolicitors Large & Gibson - Law Firm in Southsea, Portsmouth: Review

You may be curious why we've reviewed the name 'QualitySolicitors' more than once on this site. This is because that's not the actual name of the firm being discussed. Most of the time when firms are bought over or merge they also merge or drop one of the names. However, Quality Solicitors is not the parent company of Large & Gibson or any of the dozens of law firms currenly displaying that honorific.

"QualitySolicitors is the largest network of law firms in the UK, with local law firms spanning the whole of England and Wales and customer service at the heart of everything we do. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality legal advice and expertise for our clients, but in a way that's far friendlier, more accessible and clear-talking than you might expect from a law firm."

That's the brief explanation on each firm's pages. To clarify, you could think of the QS branding as more of a 'stamp of approval'? Any firm wishing to be part of the QS network must adhere to certain setups and quality control. They then display the QS title before their own in any practice branding. So 'John Doe Solicitors' becomes 'QualitySolicitors John Doe', for example. Each firm also typically changes their own website to redirect to a profile section on the main www.qualitysolicitors.com instead - but more on that later.

QualitySolicitors Large & Gibson

"We have been meeting the legal needs of those in Portsmouth, Hampshire and beyond for over 120 years."

So when you read about the actual firm or check out reviews of them, you will be reading about Large & Gibson themselves. Not QS as a whole. That's also how they are displayed on the website of The Law Society of England and Wales which is a resource we are constantly recommending. They have a wide range of user-side information such as alternate contact details, any different trading names, areas of law covered, and even languages spoken within the company. Sadly, not all law societies provide such great detail.

"Meet your lawyer face-to-face and speak directly to staff familiar with your matter."

One of the main reasons we recommend checking out a firm on the law society's site, though, is that they also display the qualification dates of any staff at the firm. This can be very useful when trying to work out whether a firm has genuine experience or is simply claiming to have such on their website. Large and Gibson claim to have been serving locally for over 120 years. Obviously they will not have a 120-year-old solicitor on staff - so that number doesn't help you work out whether they will provide a competent legal professional with the skills you need. The brand could be 120 years while all their solicitors qualified 6 months ago.

On the law society site you'll see a list of solicitors within any firm and their qualification dates. For Large&Gibson it shows staff such as Richard Wootton who qualified in 1974, Peter Dymock in 1984, Michael Rowland in 1992, right up to the (relatively new) Cara Sandillon-Charlton who joined the profession in 2015. Clearly there is a great deal of potential experience within the firm, spanning the past six decades.

"We are dedicated to making the process as hassle free as possible for our clients."

The obvious place to check out claims such as this on the firm's site are the review forums. Many firms provide client testimonials on their website and Large & Gibson do this as well. However our poll two years ago showed that there is very low trust for reviews provided by the company themselves. Most people will head to the public boards such as Google, Facebook or Trustpilot.

"communication was great, always advising"
"the team was really helpful and responsive"
"systematic and efficient which ensured a speedy hassle free experience"
"very quick responses to any queries"

At the time of writing they had 203 reviews with an average of 4.8 stars on Google which is considerably more than we see for most firms. We should point out though, that if a firm only has a handful of reviews it does not mean they are not a good firm. People simply aren't as quick to discuss their divorce, criminal proceeding, or child custody battle in a review forum. So firms who specialise in these might have few or even no reviews, while property sales legal practices will always have plenty of people expressing their feelings.

A quick note on navigation. As mentioned before the firm's own website www.largeandgibson.co.uk currently redirects to a section on the main QS site - www.qualitysolicitors.com/largeandgibson so you need to make sure you go to that specific web address. It is HTTPS secure though for submitting your personal information on the contact form.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with QualitySolicitors Large & Gibson it's best to visit the website (www.largeandgibson.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
