WYM Legal Ltd Conveyancing Solicitors in Watford: Review
If you've trawled through even just a handful of law firm websites today looking for one that stands out to you, you'll have noticed most have the same language and images. Each calling themselves modern, efficient, or friendly with photos of people smiling and shaking hands. Don't judge these firms too harshly. Most will be cautious about what they say on a legal services website. It's a curse that comes with the job. For today's example we're in the world of property sales highlighting the firm WYM Legal.
This sounds great. But 'leading' is one of those words that doesn't really give you a specific metric you can measure against another firm. Stating you are 'ranked No.1 for speed of closing in the North West of Scotland' - that could be very useful information. But 'leading' without stating what you are leading in or in what area - not so much.
So what things can be useful? First it should be noted that not all firms stating they deal with Property matters are actual firms of solicitors. You can usually check this using websites such as The Law Society for that area or the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
We've often praised The Law Society of England & Wales for its excellent user side offering. Unlike most other organisations, this one provides a wealth of information on any firm registered with it. That includes any alternate trading names, contact details, all office locations, and languages spoken. But also covers the qualification dates and areas of expertise of each solicitor in the firm. If you look up this firm on the society's site you'll see WYMLegal are registered and, at the time of writing, have 10 solicitors on staff.
WYM has also received CLC accreditation. According to the organisation's website, they 'deliver effective regulation of specialist conveyancing and probate lawyers ... by setting entry standards and regulating providers to deliver high quality, accessible legal services'. We've been in the legal industry for over 20 years now, but haven't had much dealings with the CLC so can't comment further. However, in this instance, CLC accreditation is not the only stamp of approval.
Obviously to check up on statements like these by any company most people will turn to the public boards such as Google, Facebook, Trustpilot, and so on. So what are people saying about this firm?
"knowledgeable and attentive from the beginning"
"quote was affordable and cheaper than other solicitors"
As you can see from these snippets from the independent forums, there is a fair bit of positivity about the firm's services and staff. You will see a large number of negative reviews as well. However, when it comes to law firms we always recommend people read the actual reviews for context rather than flicking through only star ratings. We've seen a divorce specialist with a negative review for not handling criminal cases, and one firm with a 5 star rating for the incredible menu.
This is especially important when it comes to conveyancing firms. It's not uncommon to see even some of the country's top conveyancing companies with 2 star or 3 star average ratings. That's because conveyancing is one of the services where people are usually upset about something. Either the length of time taken, delays that no-one will take the blame for, extra reports being ordered, and more. Since both sides always blame the other person's solicitor - you can pretty much guarantee at least one negative review in almost every single transaction. This makes it tricky for people to use star ratings to judge between property firms.
A quick note on navigation. The official site we link to above is www.wymlegal.com and www.wymlegal.co.uk does not currently redirect there. Obviously with a w right after the www. and an unusual three letter start - we've seen plenty of typos in our search function. No 'wym solicitors' variants seem to exist separately. The official site is HTTPS secure though for submitting your details via their contact form.
You must take extra care when dealing with house selling/buying these days as so many people have handed their entire deposit to a scammer sometimes just because of one official-looking email. Tens of thousands of pounds being transferred to a fraudster's bank account simply because someone didn't check with their appointed solicitor over the phone about the sudden last minute changes. Be vigilant.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with WYM Legal Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.wymlegal.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
