Penn Chambers Ltd - Solicitors in London: Review
There's no shortage of law firms around the London area. So what sort of things can you look for to distinguish which firm has the experience and expertise to handle your case best? We've been working with law firms for the past 20+ years and the introduction of the internet has had the benefit of providing a wealth of information to help with such decisions. Of course, finding them is the tricky part.
This opening snippet from the Penn Chambers website may make the law firm sound incredibly new. Especially with so many solicitor firms touting far more ancient founding dates. However, if you see 'established in 1883' that doesn't mean there is an 150-year-old solicitor sat behind the desk running things. For all intents and purposes, long establishment claims are mainly a marketing ploy. You could end up with a 40-year experienced solicitor at a 1-year-old law firm, or a 1-year-experienced solicitor from a 40-year-old law firm.
You also need to be careful with claims such as '30 years of experience within the firm' or '25 years of combined experience' because that could simply mean several solicitors all with only a couple of years experience each. Thankfully the majority of lawyers in the UK are signed up with their local Law Society. If you look up the page for Penn Chambers on The Law Society website you'll see that the principle solicitor (Shak Inayat) has been practising law since 1995. You can usually find other information such as the practice's case range, staff, other offices, alternative contact details and so on.
We're at the point now where any firm that doesn't provide online admin areas for their clients - is really lacking something. The software and systems are all easily available these days and the concept is a good one for the modern digitally-addicted consumer. The fact Penn Chambers offer this is therefore a good sign of their interest in ensuring clients' peace of mind, feeling of involvement, and keeping good communcation channels open.
Another huge potential benefit of using this firm over some others is this ability to do both. That may sound odd, however solicitors and barristers are actually two quite different groups. Not all solicitors are qualified to actually represent their clients in court. Not all barristers are able to take instructions from members of the public.
The firm's Blog section is also very client-oriented. Normally companies use the Blog section to write dozens of extra (very thinly disguised) sales pitches. This one had a considerable number of help articles answering basic questions such as "What Happens To My Pre-Nup If My Wedding Is Postponed Due To Covid-19?" and 'At What Age Can My Child Make Decisions Regarding Contact And Who To Live With?'. Don't underestimate the usefullness of such basic information either. Many solicitors will charge a fixed fee for an initial consultation. If you use up the hour asking questions you could have had the answers to for free online - then that's money down the drain.
So what do clients say about the actual service they've recieved? Well there are the obligatory testimonials on the firm's website such as:
"Shak Inayat was able to ... help me map out a sensible approach to the divorce negotiations. At a very difficult time he remained clear thinking when emotion was getting in the way of my better judgement."
But according to our poll last year, less than 19% of you trust company testimonials on websites. Not just for the legal industry either. There are plenty of third party boards you can use though such as Trustpilot, Yelp, Google, Yell.com and so on. We noticed though, that some of the reviews on the third party boards are actually the ones used on the Penn Chambers' website:
"Nino and the rest of the team are very knowledgeable and very responsive"
We also saw someone from the firm had responded to a lot of the reviews on the indepedent boards. Meaning customer engagement and feedback monitoring are clearly a priority.
One thing that made us feel a certain kinship with this particular law firm was their T&Cs section. Just the fact they kick it off with "We know it is boring, but we have to do it" really matched our own sensibilities. On the subject of navigation though, please note that the official site is www.pennchambers.co.uk with www.pennchambers.com not currently showing anything. Also, in some of the searches we tested, the website of their parent company www.penngroup.co.uk showed up as the top result. It doesn't have as much information regarding the firm and obviously has different contact information.
At the moment it is mostly property law firms and their clients that are being targeted by scammers trying to get deposits sent to the wrong bank details. You never know what's around the corner though and with the various alternative domains possible (e.g. neither www.pennsolicitors.co.uk or www.penngroup.com are currently owned by the firm) it'd be a good idea to bookmark the correct site once you're on it if you plan to return.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Penn Chambers Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.pennchambers.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
