Edward Hands & Lewis Solicitors in Lewisham, Loughborough & Leicester: Review
A lot of new trendy names are popping as solicitor brands these days. Some have apps, busy Twitter feeds, and even Instagrams going on. Of course, some solicitors are still in the technical dark-ages without even a website to showcase. Can law firms straddle the line between stalwart and modern?
For Edward Hands & Lewis, we'll start with a 'do they have history' question. Here is how their About Us page starts off:
Sound historical enough for you? So now we check to see if they are modern. Whilst they definitely have the right trimmings such as Facebook, Twitter and the like - the links to each profile are right down at the bottom of the pages. That's not a bad thing. We actually like that. Whilst social media profiles are great for providing things like phone numbers, addresses, opening hours, etc. They are not very good for actual useful communication when it comes to legal issues. Therefore, if a firm is strongly pushing clients towards their social media profiles on the actual website - we can only wonder why. So, another point to Edward Hands and Lewis.
Arguments could be made about the reliability of email vs Royal Mail, but EHL has decided to express faith in technology:
We will respond to emails received within 24 hours.
Our offices are open between 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday and our telephone lines are open from 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday.
We will return any calls received before 4:30pm on the same day.
We will deal with all incoming post promptly and respond within 3 days."
You can't get much clearer than that. Plus email does have the flexibility of not only time usage for corresponding, but also keeps a written record of the back and forth. Something you don't get from phone calls.
The firm has received a number of awards. In 2009 and 2011 they were recognised as the Leicestershire Law Society Law Firm of the Year. In 2012 they received the Business of the Year Award for Loughborough. 2013 brought a Services Award for their Leicestershire operations. Then in 2014 the firm's Managing Director was crowned Boss of the Year for Leicestershire.
At the time of writing this, there are currently 15 EHL offices across England: Beeston, Bulwell, Buxton, Carlton, CityGate, Hinckley, Hucknall, Leicester, Lewisham, Loughborough, Lutterworth, Market Harborough, Melbourne, Stockport, and Syston.
Their case range is just as wide, with help offered in Conveyancing, Right to Buy, Remortgaging, Probate, Contested Probate, Lasting Power of Attorney, Wills, Trusts, Family Law, Matrimonial Law, Divorce, Employment Law, Unfair Dismissal, Discrimination, Personal Injury, Holiday Claims, Industrial Disease, Medical Negligence, Business Law, Insolvency, Commercial Property, Debt Recovery, Intellectual Property and more.
Another thing they have a lot of, is 'lists'. If you do peruse the firm's website, there is an abundance of information. Much more than your typical law firm. I've already mentioned the About Us page and its in-depth history. But the pages about case types, how they work, staff and so on are also just as extensive. Rather than continue with standard boring paragraphs like we do here in our reviews - they use lists. It works too:
We will be honest and open with you about our fees at all times during your client journey
We will endeavour to give you likely estimates of costs and offer any fixed/capped costs where we are able to
We will discuss any appropriate funding arrangements with you where necessary
We will fully itemise our invoices so you understand what work has been done and how much you have been charged for our time ..."
Now you may think that focusing on such a non-legal-idea as using lists to get across information to be a bit of a tangent. But at the start of the article we were trying to get across the point that most solicitors either throw themselves away and embrace everything they think is 'trendy' - or they refuse to change and seem 'out of touch'. EHL have done neither. Their website has modern features, and older ones. It has great chunks of information, and it has nicely laid out lists. It has plenty of history, but the awards are recent. It's unique. It's itself. That's my point.
If I had to pick something to criticise (and what review would be complete without a bit of nit-picking) I'd prefer less text on each page. Some statements are repeated, some are drawn out, and some seem superfluous - i.e. simply there to enlarge the list's size, such as these:
Our people are trained in line with our triple 'A' standard, which means that you will receive the same standard of care throughout your client journey ..."
But as complaints go, this one would reflect mostly on smaller firms. Usually if the website is long-winded in a firm of 3-4 people, then you can expect some of the staff to be a bit long-winded too. However, Edward Hands and Lewis is a very large firm and therefore probably have a dedicated web-person. They'll be the ones with lots to say ... and yes, I'm seeing the irony being tapped out in front of me ... ;)
Right now, there is a free 30 minute initial assessment available. Not only by phone but in person at any of their offices too. Locations, phone numbers, etc. can be found on the main www.ehlsolicitors.co.uk website. The www.ehlsolicitors.com version is currently not owned by the firm, and neither are the www.ehl.com or www.ehl.co.uk variants. Obviously, using the 'and' in the name would make for a long web address, and you can't have '&' characters in domain names. That means the only other alternative is www.edwardhandslewis.co.uk, but neither that or the www.edwardhandslewis.com version are owned by the firm either. There is just the one web address, so please bookmark it once you're on there. If you haven't read our bits about law firm phishing - do so. It's not just banks fraudsters try to imitate.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Edward Hands & Lewis Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.ehlsolicitors.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
