HJA.net - Hodge Jones & Allen LLP Solicitors in London: Review

On our network we're partnered with many firms that could be considered 'big'. It's a relative term. We list firms with more than a dozen office locations. We list firms that process £millions in cases. But when we use the word 'big' to describe Hodge Jones & Allen LLP, it's their presence we're talking about - which is the 'biggest' we've seen so far.

For example, solicitors typically don't get a lot of online reviews in the same way local shops or online service providers get. You'd be lucky to scrape up even a handful on any particular firm. However, the type and scope of work HJA gets involved with seems to have resulted in the availability of hundreds of reviews to flick through should you feel the need. At the time of writing there were 162 on TrustPilot, 81 on Reviews, 60 on Google, and so on. All above 4☆. The latter even lists HJA's articles in the Google News search results alongside the BBC, Guardian, Times, etc. A position we've only ever attained with 2 of over 100 websites we've worked on.

Also, they are only the 3rd firm on our network to have their own Wikipedia page which details the history we just indicated, from the 1980's miner strike to Gulf War Syndrome and beyond. It also mentions the little fact that Cherie Blair opened their new offices in 1997 - invited to as she had worked at the firm early in her career.

This 'big-ness' doesn't just apply to their online presence or things that could be considered mere PR/branding efforts. The firm actually opened a club in their basement called Club Inegales:

... and their awards page was too long for us to even read thoroughly. By the umpteenth award, we did what most people would do - i.e. think "okay, I got it", and move on. Everything from Legal 500 UK Firm of the Year, Legal Aid Team of the Year, Personal Injury Team of the Year and even individual awards such as staff ending up on The Lawyer Hot 100 list. Their local university even awarded them Employer of the Year.

This popularity seems to come without the usual nay-sayers. There are several possible reasons for this that we noticed.

First off is the roots of the firm which started as duty solicitors at police stations in the poorest parts of London. The clientele and Legal Aid dependancy would shape any firm in a certain direction. Indeed, we have a couple of firms on our panel just now that still work under such conditions. Another factor could be that Patrick Allen founded the firm in 1977 and still runs it 40+ years on. The downsides of constantly changing staff and leadership can be easily seen in how our government is run. I don't think anyone can argue that!

There also seems to be an active interest in law generally and in helping people. I will point out that altruism is often more easily afforded by well established firms with a solid income. However it shouldn't be ignored as a result. Hodge Jones & Allen staff often go on the radio to discuss and advise on legal matters. They've been one of the most successful fundraisers through JustGiving. Staff have apparently run, walked, climbed, cycled, and baked to raise money for organisations such as Headway, Child Brain Injury Trust, Spinal Injuries Association, Narcolepsy UK and more.



Their main case range includes Criminal Defence, Employment Law, Wills & Probate, Medical Negligence, Family Law, Military Claims, Dispute Resolution, Personal Injury, Social Housing, Industrial Disease, and Property Disputes. They still work with Legal where possible, but every year it seems that government cuts strip away access to justice. Despite this, HJA actively encourages other lawyers to get involved.

On their website you'll find a full list of staff with photos, basic histories and specialities for each. This is thankfully becoming the norm for firms around the UK and we think goes a long way to bridging the gap between the legal industry as a whole and potential clients. Of course, some firms do go a bit far sometimes detailing hobbies, music preferences, and even favourite colours. (No, seriously.) We didn't see such things on this occasion though.

On the subject of their website, we should make a quick note about navigation. The official address is www.hja.net as detailed above. The reason for the .net ending is probably because www.hja.co.uk and www.hja.com have been taken by different firms. Please note than any web address using 'hodgejones&allen' with any dot-ending will not work as '&' characters are not allowed, but there are no working websites using the full 'hodgejonesandallen' version either anyway. There does seem to have been a website at www.hodgejonesallen.co.uk at some point, and you may see it pop up in the search results of Google. However, when clicked it currently forwards you to the official site whilst www.hodgejonesallen.com doesn't even exist. We did spot others too, such as www.hjallenllp.com which seems to be simply a duplicate of the main site. So all things considered, it would be advisable to bookmark the correct site once on it to make sure you always come safely back. Whilst most online scams relating to solicitors tend to revolve around property sales, you never know what people are going to come up with next.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with HJA Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.hja.net), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
