Drummond Miller LLP Solicitors in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bathgate, Musselburgh, Dalkeith & East Kilbride: Review
The law is constantly changing, but law firms themselves didn't really seem to change for a few centuries. That was until the internet came along. Solicitors could work from home, create their own startup firm, and build connections to grow their business without the need to spend a decade under someone else's brand first. Clients also no longer had to visit a specific building to get their matter seen to.
This has had some great impacts on the industry in the way it deals with clients and the ease and speed at which things can be dealt with. But it does mean there are no longer half a dozen known brand name firm's in a given local area where everyone knows their reputation. There are now literaly thousands of firms within the reach of your fingertips that could handle your legal issue.
Many of our articles try to introduce you to some of these new firms and point out ways in which you can research whether they are on good ground or merely pretending to have the experience they claim. Today's article however is on Drummond Miller.
Unfortunately potential clients seeking legal help in Scotland don't have one of the great resources of their neighbours. The Law Society of England & Wales has a huge user side pile of data for people to go through on any of their members including any trading names, alternative contact details, languages spoken, etc. But most importantly it provides the areas of law practiced and qualification date of each solicitor within the firm.
That means you can check the actual expertise and experience of the individual solicitor you've spoken to on the phone about taking your case, or even before phoning them if you know you are going to speak to them. It's a resource we constantly recommend to people. Scottish residents however have the Law Society of Scotland website which is slightly better than it was a few years back, but still provides only basic information that doesn't seem to help you learn more than you did before visiting the site. We can't even link you to a page with information, only to a search results page which at the time of writing was pushing information off the edges of the mobile device.
So what can you use? People typically rush to review forums when thinking about using a firm. Many companies across all industries provide customer testimonials on their site.
It's an odd thing that company provided testimonials can often lack the 'realness' you see on the public boards. These snippets above are from a Drummond Miller testimonial page and whilst all the comments are clearly going to be positive (we've seen only one firm that posted both positive and negative reviews on their own site) they don't actually tell you much about the past client's actual experience. That's probably why in our poll a few years back, only 9% of people voted that they trusted prior client comments posted by the company on their site.
These are a selection of reviews from the independent boards such as Google, Facebook, Yell, Trustpilot, etc. They are all still mostly positive and at the time of writing DM had a Google rating of 4.4 stars. Having worked in this industry for over 20+ years, please don't take it as hyperbole when we say - that's an amazing score for a firm that deals in property.
Right now the leading (by quantity) conveyancer in the UK has a Google rating of 3.2 stars. We've seen many in the 2s. This is because in property matters, clients are very, very, very rarely happy with how things have gone and especially with the speed it has gone. On top of that, property buying/selling is the only legal service product we know where the opposite side consistently leaves negative reviews as well. In other words, they don't just leave a review for their own solicitor but for the solicitor of the other buyer/seller's solicitor too. So any conveyancer with a high star rating is a rarity.
But even with other legal matters and firms, don't rely on star ratings. Make sure to read the comments to see what kind of things might be being complained about or what things the firm seems to get right. There are usually easily spottable 'themes'.
A quick but important note on navigation though. The official website follows the firm's name so www.drummondmiller.co.uk as the firm is not 'Drummond & Miller' as we've seen some people searching for on here. It's very common for solicitors to use their names with an 'and' in between, but not in this case. Also keep in mind that even if a firm has an 'and' in the name, web addresses cannot contain ampersands. For example, www.drummond&miller.co.uk could not exist, it would be www.drummondandmiller.co.uk
The site is HTTPS secure for submitting your contact details via their form. But the reason we're making a fuss about making sure you're on the correct site, is that over the past decade or so it's become far too common to see headlines about people who have handed their entire house deposit over to fraudsters. Sometimes for something as simple as an official-looking email telling them the bank payment details have changes. That may sound like something you would never fall for. But just be wary and be careful about the things you do discuss via email. Any concerns, ring your actual solicitor to check.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Drummond Miller LLP it's best to visit the website (www.drummondmiller.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
