Michael Rose & Baylis Ltd Solicitors in Liverpool: Review

Like many Scots, I'm a fan of various towns in England that English people don't seem as keen on. The most renown is Blackpool. But I'm also a big fan of Liverpool, despite having spent so much time face down on it's wet streets investigating cracks in pavements. That's not why we added Michael Rose & Baylis to the network though.

There's a glaring split when it comes to the matter of a law firm's age. If the firm can trace it's routes back a couple of hundred years (no matter how tenuously) they will boast about how great that is for clients with words such as 'experienced' and 'reliable'. If a firm only has a decade or so under it's belt, it will boast how great that is for clients with words such as 'modern' and 'fresh'. Is one better than the other? No. Not in the slightest. Why? Because a 30-year old firm might put a 6-month experienced solicitor on your case, and a 6-month old firm might put a 30-year experienced solicitor on your case.

Take Michael Rose & Baylis for example. Whilst only established in 2014, you can check which solicitors work there on The Law Society website. Currently there are five including Terence Paul Otty who's been a solicitor since 2002 and Adonis Michael who qualified in 2010.

You may think they're overdoing the 'youth' bit by this point as we're only on the second sentence of the first page. However, it's not just buzzwords. They really do have a mix, with one solicitor qualified in 2002 and another in 2018. Not only that - they haven't gone over the top trying to prove the 'modern' part.

If you visit the firm's Facebook page there are only a handful of posts a month and a few dozen Likes. That's a really good sign. Unfortunately, far too many firms devote an abnormal amount of energy to their image - as if they couldn't class themselves as a 'modern' firm with less than a thousand followers on Twitter or something. MR&B have the bits and pieces they should and, in our opinion, devote just the right amount of time to them for a law firm.

We did see that they are offering 'free conveyancing quotes' ... but please don't think this means the majority of other firms charge you for a quote. They don't. Oddly enough, the thing MRB do provide for free isn't mentioned much at all. Michael Rose & Baylis are involved in Will Aid, which means that once a year they help people sort out their Will but donate all fees charged to charity. They mention this in a blog article on an inner page, but I don't think it would be too show-off-y to mention it nearer the front - if only to promote the idea and get more people involved.

As for their reviews, they certainly stand out as not being the typical 'I highly recommend ...' or '... would use again!' that seem almost copy/pasted on most firm's sites. These look a lot more genuine:



As a relatively new firm there aren't a lot of independent reviews or news articles about Michael Rose and Bayliss out there for us to point you to. If we spot them in the future, we'll add them.

Just a few general tips regarding reviews though: if the exact same 5 star reviews are copy/pasted on to every review site - they're probably fake. If there's several good reviews all written on the same day two years ago - they're probably fake. If they have dozens of good reviews all written by users who have only ever written that one review - they're probably fake. But even real reviews can be misleading. If a firm is showing an average score of 1 out of 5, click the link to see how many people actually voted. You may see that the bad score is actually just one person who's complaint is nonsense.

A quick note on navigation as we're dealing with a pretty long web address. The official address is linked to above and uses the .com, but www.michaelroseandbaylis.co.uk currently does redirect to that main site. There are obviously a whole bunch of variants and mis-spellings possible though such as www.michaelrosebaylis.com or www.michaelroseandbayliss.com, and none of the ones we tested went to the right firm. Also, you can't have special characters so www.michaelrose&baylis.com will just confuse your browser. We therefore highly recommend bookmarking the site once you're on it to be sure. Especially with the amount of conveyancing scams doing the rounds the past few years.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Michael Rose & Baylis it's best to visit the website (www.michaelroseandbaylis.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
