Robson & Co Solicitors based in Hythe, Shepway, Kent: Review
Hythe, the small coastal market town on the edge of Romney Marsh, southern Kent - comes from an Old English word meaning "Haven" or "Landing Place".
Hythe was once defended by two castles, Saltwood and Lympne. Also, according to Edward Hasted -- the author of The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent (1778–99) -- a French fleet approached Hythe in 1293 and landed 200 men, but "the townsmen came upon them and slew every one of them: upon which the rest of the fleet hoisted sail and made no further attempt".
So you'd expect any law firm based in such a historically feisty location, to imitate it's surroundings! Or is that asking too much?
Robson & Co tackle a wide range of legal issues, including Conveyancing. Buying or selling a home is normally the largest transaction most people will ever make, so having not only the right technical experience (to keep the regulators, lenders and insurers happy) but plenty of experience to calmly handle any hurdles is also a must. If you flick through Robson's staff list, you'll see a range of experience - some 20-30 years as qualified solicitors. So, we'd have to count that as a plus.
With Wills and probate, Robson's state that their: "personal and professional service gives you peace of mind that your children and family are looked after when you can no longer provide for them".
It was commented in our office that such sounded slightly 'patriarchal'. But personally, taking the rest of the content into consideration (and as the person actually writing this review) I believe it is gender-free expression. Unfortunately, unless it specifically says something like 'the providing guardian or guardians' - I think there will always be room to take it various ways. The fact is, the term 'bread winner' is often still associated with the 'man of the house', and in most advertising it is the men who are targeted to take out a will and life insurance. Anyway - we're making too much of this.
Robson&Co's Family Law experts, like all other firms, will either be the type you are looking for or not. As they say on their website - all relationship collapses are stressful. Also, each person will be looking to feel understood. Make sure to speak with the person that will actually be handling your case before signing on the dotted line. We believe you need to really 'click' with your divorce solicitor. The same does not often apply to things such as motor offences.
Here at 1to1Legal, we've found it difficult to find enough firms that deal with discrimination and unfair dismissal. So we were over the moon to get this firm on board in the lower east side of England, where there has been a gap for many months. Certainly, we think it is a good sign of a good firm when they do take on such cases, because they are often tricky - especially in the area of evidence - so it indicates a firm that doesn't mind a challenge, and who very likely has a real interest in helping people.
As for the Robson & Co. Team - we're impressed.
On their contact page, they list the email addresses and direct contact phone numbers of their main staff, solicitors and legal professionals. That is rare. I mean, really, really rare. The common practice, as I'm sure you'll have seen elsewhere, is to have a receptionist who answers the phone then directs calls depending on whether the solicitor is in the middle of their sandwich or not. Worse still, are those firms where the receptionist asks you personal questions, you answer them, she walks through to the solicitor's office, tries to repeat what you've said, listens to the solicitor, walks back to their desk, then tries to repeat what the solicitor said ... then rinse and repeat several times until one of you gives up and slams down the phone in frustration!
Keith Betts - Managing Director and Solicitor Advocate has been working in the legal profession since 1988. He is a Higher Court Advocate (Criminal), appears regularly in the Crown Court, has successfully appeared in the Court of Appeal on a number of occasions and is a Specialist Fraud Panel Supervisor.
Chris Doherty - Company Director and Head of Conveyancing, was apparently born & schooled locally (see earlier comments about local tenacity).
Henry Doswell - Associate - has over 13 years' experience as an employment lawyer working for specialist employment law firms in London. He is an accredited ADR Group workplace mediator and a member of the Employment Lawyers Association.
Those are the three that stood out and which we feel give you a good overview of how the company is set up and the type of people/experience you can expect to be helping you out and backing you up.
A word on browsing: we've noticed a lot of searches for "robinson solicitors" in the Kent area. Be sure you remember it right if you decide to search later. It is Robson, not Robinsons Solicitors. Also, from what we can see, the website www.robsonandco.co.uk is the same law firm as the one at www.robson-co.co.uk
If you're not local and are going to Hythe specifically to visit this firm - there is apparently a Farmers' Market every second and fourth Saturday of the month. Hythe has gardening, horse riding, bowling, tennis, cricket, football, squash and sailing clubs. So, if it's a long trip - why not take advantage of the local ameneties and surroundings after what might be a very difficult meeting at the firm's office.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Robson & Co Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.robson-co.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
