A City Law Firm Ltd in London: Review

Today's article also focuses on things you can do to research a firm you're thinking of using. A City Law Firm has been on our network for a while now and has many aspects about it you may have come across in your search for legal help and wondered what it means or where you can get more information. For example:

"Named: Most innovative law firm, London"

"Voted top legal 500 family law firm"

A City Law Firm Ltd

These snippets from the firm's website are far more specific than you might normally see. It's more likely for firms to just say they are 'award winning' and make no reference to what that award might be. This is something to watch out for though. Don't make assumptions because for all you know it may be an award for best logo design and nothing to do with their actual law experience. So if you see clearer statements like those on A City Law Firm's site then tack on a couple of extra brownie points.

The Legal 500 is one name you might have spotted on a lot of legal professional websites. They have more information about their setup and what each award means on their website. But they certainly sound as if they take their role in consumer information seriously. This is from the Legal 500's description:

"These rankings reflect the result of months of extensive analysis by our research team, who conduct thousands of interviews with private practice lawyers and read through tens of thousands of submissions in order to select the very best lawyers and law firms in the UK."

Another great resource online that we have recommended constantly is The Law Society of England & Wales' website. Their organisation provides an excellent range of user side data which is sadly not mirrored by their Scottish or Irish counterparts. If you check the page for any firm you'll be provided any alternate brand names used, a list of staff, contact details, case types specialised in, and the qualification dates of any solicitors within the firm.

That last bit of data is hugely helpful when it comes to working out if a firm is experienced or not. Some firms may state they have '15 years combined experience' or '10 years experience within the firm' which might mean they have 5x staff each with only 3 years of experience. That's very different to a firm having a 10 or 15 year experienced lawyer on staff.

"We are proud to be different. We strive for innovation and have a proven track record of client satisfaction that stems from a personal approach ..."

The staff page of A City Law Firm shows Karen Holden qualified in 2005, Janette Johnston in 2008, Jacqueline Watts in 2013, and so on. So for any firm you're able to see for yourself whether there is a decent amount of experience individually and collaboratory in the firm you're thinking of using.

"Our firm’s culture of supporting our clients is very important to us"

On any law firm's website you will see something like this stating how much they care about their clients. The most obvious way to check up on those claims is through the public review boards such as Google, Trustpilot, Facebook, Yelp, etc. We ran a poll a few years back which stated only 8% of you trusted company provided testimonials.

However for business to business service providers such as A City Law Firm such testimonials pages are usually a little different. They will all still be the positive comments, but they will also display the name of an actual business willing to have their brand posted on that page next to those comments. So such testimonials might be worth a browse in those circumstances?

"My family and I have used the firm for several years"

"advice, support, communication and responsiveness is a masterclass in customer service"

"they listened to me and clearly communicated everything"

"made to feel calm and reassured through a very difficult process"

These snippets are from the independent review forums where the majority are also positive. Just a tip though - make sure to actually read through comments rather than rely on average star ratings when researching any law practice. We've seen a lawyer with a 5 star review for their 'new italian menu' and a 1 star rating for a Criminal Law specialist for refusing to handle someone's divorce.

At this point we should also mention the firm's branding and navigation. Surprisingly dispite the generic words in the name, when we typed 'a city law firm' into sites we were shown reviews and results for the correct firm. This doesn't always happen when a firm has non-unique words in the brand name. Sometimes even for big brands we've had to type in the location of the head office to get the correct reviews to show up. So if you're having trouble finding them bear that in mind.

"We can be flexible with our fee structure and will consider different models for different clients."

The official site we link to above is www.acitylawfirm.com and www.acitylawfirm.co.uk will redirect you there. The site is https secure for submitting your details via their online form. That might sound an obvious thing to have but there are dozens of law firms that still have not moved to https on their website's yet. In fact, just a couple of years ago almost a quarter of firms on our own network were not https secure. So make sure to keep an eye out.

Plus with all the phishing scams still going on always make sure you're on the correct website and never discuss payment details via email. Some people have lost tens of thousands of pounds by falling for a single official-looking email that said they needed to suddenly change the payee bank details.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with A City Law Firm Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.acitylawfirm.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
