Ian Mallon Solicitors Ltd in Newry and Dublin: Review

The goal of 1to1Legal is not to create a massive directory of law firms with as many crammed in as possible. The idea is to find a handful of different types of law office in each area so not only can you have a local firm if you want, but also be more aware of what's out there. That's why we have local, international, large, small, general practice, niche boutique, solicitors, barristers, accountants, paralegals and more.

So right off the bat it's obvious that we already have a high opinion of Ian Mallon Solicitors otherwise they wouldn't have been added to our network to begin with. What we can do for you though, is clarify our reasons for wanting to work with them. That might help you with your own research and suggest some general resources you can use to check up on law firms in general.

"Everyone within our practice has a commitment to understand the needs of our clients and to structure our services to deal effectively with those needs."

Ian Mallon Solicitors

Many law firms make statements about how wonderful their staff are and the huge amount of experience within the firm. That snippet from Ian Mallon's site may sound good, but how can you independently check up on just how much expertise and experience actually exists within the practice you're looking at?

Most legal professionals are signed up to a Law Society. Ian Mallon are signed up with both the Northern Ireland Law Society and The Law Society of England & Wales. You can view their page on the NI organisation's website here but we've found that the English/Welsh organisation's website usually provides far more useful information for consumers. (The fact we're a Scottish firm admitting that fact should indicate just how true it must be!)

If you look up any registered law practice or legal professional covering England/Wales you'll usually get an in depth look including a list of case expertise, alternate offices and contact details, staff details, and so on. It will provide each solicitor's qualification date too. Put it all together and you can get a much better picture of how well established and how strong a firm and the team within it are. Unfortunately today the page for this firm on The English/Welsh Law Society's website wasn't working properly. Maybe you'll have more luck.

"All individual email addresses for each member of staff is in our Meet The Team section above."

The fact Ian Mallon list direct contact details for each staff member on their website is a much bigger deal than you might think and something we've tried to push more firms to do. Over the past few years having staff profiles on the company website has become more common. Sadly, the focus seems to be more on the person's favourite colour and hobbies rather than any real insight into how they will act as your solicitor.

However the staff profiles on this firm's site were spot on. They provided details about work history, length of time working as a solicitor and current roles on top of having direct contact details. That's great, and more firms should follow their setup.

"Ian graduated from Queen's University, Belfast with a Bachelor of Laws Degree in 1999. He attended the Institute of Professional Legal Studies Belfast in 2001 and was admitted as a Solicitor in Northern Ireland in 2002 and in the Republic of Ireland in 2003. Ian worked for a regional law firm in Dublin from 2002 until 2005, when he founded the Practice of Ian Mallon Solicitors ..."

The profiles go on to cover Martin McPolin (qualified in 2005), John Woods (2000), Stephen Doran (2001), and more showing a real snapshot into the amount of experience you can expect to rely on. The website also provides several case studies which have been surprisingly popular reading for many people - e.g. this one about a mesothelioma settlement. Some are certainly more interesting than others. Whenever we share a case study from one of our Motoring Offence law firms about how they got someone off a speeding ticket, practically everyone we share with ends up clicking through to that article.

Ian Mallon's website also has a Polish translated section showing an interest in their local population. Newry has a Polish Families Community Association with bustling Facebook page and all. We're sure the firm's extra step of translating the site to cater for that has not gone unappreciated.

"The practice offers a highly personalised relationship, working closely with our clients to resolve the often complex range of legal challenges that can face individuals and companies."

So how are the firm being rated by previous clients? Because most people tend not to trust testimonials on company websites, we always prefer to grab snippets from the third party forums such as Google, Yell.com, Yelp and Trustpilot. The reviews were always mixed in on each site though. We didn't find any review separation between the Newry and Dublin offices.

"this company came with good recommendations, very grateful to them for my positive experience through a difficult time"

"everything was communicated very clearly and I was kept up to date with the process"

"helpful and informative and prompt in dealing with my case"

"kept me updated all the way through this claim and answered all my emails even through this pandemic"

The majority of comments were positive like this. When checking out review boards though, we always suggest you read comments rather than just look at star ratings. Over the past 20+ years of working with law firms we've seen so many negative reviews for firms that were clearly unwarranted or simply about the wrong firm. For example, we saw a negative review of a Divorce specialist for refusing to take on someone's Personal Injury case. No, really.

A quick note on navigation. As the firm uses the founder's name rather than generic law keywords for it's web address, there shouldn't be as many possible issues. The official site we link to is www.ianmallon.com with www.ianmallon.co.uk not currently showing anything. There could be some common spelling errors such as 'Malon' or people looking up other variations such as ianmallonsolicitors.com - but it's always a good idea to bookmark any site you plan on coming back to anyway.

The firm's website is https secure so you should be fine entering your details into the contact forms. Just make sure to watch carefully at the website address and email reply names that pop up during your case. Right now people are losing millions of pounds to scammers over property matters simply by not realising the email they received was from an incorrect address or the website they clicked on was fake.

A last word to sum up from the firm themselves:

"Whether you are a company or an individual and need legal advice – the best way to find out how we can help is to contact us."

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Ian Mallon Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.ianmallon.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
