Mckie Legal Solicitors in Penrith & St Helens (ConnectMeToaLawyer Ltd): Review

Mckie Legal is named after the firm's director Andrew Ian McKie. Whilst we often have unique reasons for adding a firm to our network such as specialising in a ridiculously niche area of law or an alternative type of solution such as direct access chambers - McKie Legal intially appealed to us simply because they are a law firm in a small town.

That may sound like a very odd reason. But to be honest, in the legal industry it's very common for solicitors to move to larger populations to increase their potential client base. We've covered many firms that proudly start off their website's sales pitch with 'as a large city firm ...' or something similar. We like to see firm's bragging about being a stalwart local fixture. However the concept of the local solicitors office has become something of an almost quaint, nostalgic notion these days when Amazon will bring you any item in the world within 24 hrs of you ordering it (usually whilst sat on the toilet).

"We have a strong emphasis on client care and providing a friendly and no jargon service keeping you fully updated on the case at all stages."

Mckie Legal

If you've already flicked through a bunch of other lawyer websites today, you'll have quickly noticed that the content is very similar. Freqently there are phrases which sound good like 'we're friendly' - but then you think, 'well, what firm is going to say anything different?'.

There are plenty of things you might not have thought of though that can identify a firm as offering more than another. For example:

"or if you prefer simply an out of hours appointment simply fill in the contact form"

This snippet from the Mckie Legal contact page might be easily skipped over on first read, but law firms that offer to see you or even just speak to you outside of the 9am-5pm Mon-Fri block are fewer than you would expect. The legal industry is one that really hasn't moved swiftly and easily into the modern digital available-all-the-time age. So this seemingly innocuous sentence is actually worth quite a few brownie points

"Contact us for a FREE claims assessment & no obligation confidential chat."

This statement on the other hand is something you should absolutely expect from any lawyer that handles personal injury matters. Since the huge shake up to legal aid in the 90s, solicitors now mostly offer to run claims cases for free. Hence the popular no win, no fee slogan across all their websites. Please note though that 'no win, no fee' and '100% compensation' are two totally separate offers. The first means no fees if your case loses. The second means no fees whether case your case loses OR wins.

"Insurance policy in place so nothing to pay win or lose*."

It therefore looks as though Mckie's solicitors offer both. But whether a solicitor charges a success fee or not shouldn't be the end-all of your decision to use them. A solicitor that takes 10% of your settlement but gets you £5000 compensation is a far better choice than one who takes no cut but only gets you a £1000 early settlement deal.

It's not unusual for solicitors to have one or two trading names on the side. This is usually marked very clearly and carefully on each firm's website of course. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you'll usually see a statement like this one.

"Mckie Legal is a Trading Name of Connectmetoalawyer Limited"

That's useful because even if you can't find a lot of information or reviews on the trading name - you can often find such on the firm behind it. The use of trading names is not something to worry about. We cover the reasons why solicitors do this in our article here, and they mostly started because of strange advertising laws the government kept toying with.

Knowing the correct name for a firm is also useful when background checking about them as that will be the name registered with organisations and government agencies. A good resource we always recommend using in conjuction with your search is local law societies. This firm is registered with The Law Society of England & Wales which has excellent user-side data for you to check out including all alternate trading names and even specialties and qualification dates of the solicitors working there.

We couldn't find any public reviews on McKie Legal at the time of writing this. But when it comes to solicitors, no reviews should not be taken as a negative sign. It's very common even for firms with decades of history to have less than a handful of online reviews about them. It's just far less likely that someone will rush online to discuss how they feel about their criminal law case or messy divorce than it is for them to jump online and tell you about the restaurant they just ate at.

It's also far more common to get misleading reviews about solicitors because a lot of times any case will have a winner, and a loser. We have seen losing sides leave negative reviews about the winning side's law firm. We've seen negative reviews about firms that refused to take people's cases. So make sure to read actual comments of any reviews when it comes to lawyers rather than just flicking through star ratings.

"Ive been asked a few times already 'which Barrister did you use?'"

This is a quote from the firm's website relating to a review from another law firm (Scott Rees). That means more than you might think. It means that law firm actually sought out the team at McKie to represent their client for the best success of the case.

A quick note on navigation considering the related names as we even saw three different addresses for the firm popping up. The main address is in Penrith but they've recently opened a local office in St Helens according to a recent Legal Futures article. We're not sure about the Wigan office the law society is still showing, but www.mckielegal.co.uk is the official website which we link to above with www.mckielegal.com not currently being owned by anyone and most of the variants (e.g. www.mckiesolicitors.co.uk) being the same. Normally we would have a mini-rant about 'protecting clients from scammers', but that's not really necessary here.

Most scammers target law firm clients that will be making a payment to their solicitor. Not vice versa. For example the biggest area of law scam right now is with property buying and selling. Scammers convince people selling their house that they need to pay the deposits into fraudulent bank accounts. Usually with just a single email too, which is disturbingly easy. You never know what fraudsters will think of next though so always keep aware and never discuss bank details over the phone.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Mckie Legal it's best to visit the website (www.mckielegal.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
