McCarthy + Co LLP Solicitors in Dublin, Cork & Clonakilty: Review
It's always a sad thing for us to admit with 1to1Legal being a Scottish firm, but The Law Society of England & Wales has produced a far better and more user friendly website than any of its counterparts. This includes the Law Societies of both NI and ROI too. English and Welsh potential clients can check out all related trading names, contact information, areas of law specialised in, even the individual names and qualification dates of each solicitor within the firm.
This offers huge advantages when trying to verify a law firm or look into which is best for you. It took us a few attempts on the Irish Law Society website just to get the search function to work properly. In the end, all it showed us was the address and phone number for McCarthy & Co. It didn't even link to the secure version of the firm's website either. That's terrible and we'll explain more about why later.
So what can you do to discern which legal service provider is best for you if you're in an area without a good legal database? The reason third party sites are so helpful in these decisions is because most law firms tend to say the same sorts of things on their website. Even this quote above from the McCarthy & Co site about being award-winners is a claim made by so many of its rivals.
One thing to bear in mind though is that while many firms claim to be award winning - not all of them seem to clarify which award that is. If they have won an award for 'best logo design', we don't think that really counts towards them being a decent legal practice. So the phrase 'award-winning' is not of itself meaningful. McCarthy's site does state some of the awards won including a few from the Irish Law Awards. But pay attention whether any claims a firm make are actually backed up.
They have accreditation from various organisations such as APIL (Association of Personal Injury Lawyers) as well as a quality assurance stamp from LQSI (Legal Quality Standards of Ireland). There are various levels starting at Q1000 with Q9000 being the top tier of quality assurance. Independent markers such as these can help identify firms that are well established and keen to show a higher quality status. They are not the be-all and end-all of important things to check. But every little helps.
Of course the main way people tend to check up on statements about customer service and friendliness of staff within a firm is to look up the independent review forums such as Google, Facebook and Trustpilot. So what are they saying?
"very helpful and quick to respond to any of my queries"
"the team had my interest at heart"
"friendly manner distracted me from the court process"
The comments we saw like these snippets above were generally very positive. We had an issue trying to get reviews to come up on Google's site. At the moment Google seem to have changed their setup so that you cannot search for reviews on a firm in general - only on a specific office location. For example if you type 'mccarthy and co in clonakilty' you will see data for that office. But searches for variations of the firm's name on it's own will provide no local business information.
A quick note on navigation should be made with the firm having an 'and' or '+' sign in it's branding. Ampersands and plus signs cannot be in web addresses. The official site is www.mccarthy.ie but domain attempts containing mccarthy&co or mccarthy+co will return an error or generate search results depending on your browser. This is especially important since the firm handles property matters.
For some reason (which we don't fully understand) for over a decade now people have been handing their entire house deposit to fraudsters. That's tens of thousands of pounds at a time. Sometimes simply because they received an official looking email that said to change the bank payment details at the last minute. So always make sure you're on the correct site. Make sure the site is HTTPS secure if you are submitting your personal details via the contact form. Never, ever discuss payments via email and call the person you normally deal with to ask if any change is valid.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with McCarthy + Co LLP it's best to visit the website (www.mccarthy.ie), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
