The defining geographical feature of the county is the North Downs, a chalk escarpment which runs from the south-west to north-east and divides the densely populated north from the more rural south; it is pierced by the rivers Wey and Mole, both tributaries of the Thames. It lies on the southern edge of the London Basin and the highest point in the parish, at Leatherhead Downs, is 135 m (443 ft) above ordnance datum. The settlement grew up beside a ford on the River Mole, from which its name is thought to derive. The Mole, which passes toward the west of the middle, has carved a lofty sided valley through the North Downs, south of the town.
