This is derived from Irish Lios na gCearrbhach 'ringfort of the gamesters/gamblers'. The borough was divided into four electoral areas: Castlereagh Central, South, East and West. It was the second-largest council area in Northern Ireland with over 120,000 people and an area of 174 square miles (450 km2) of southwest Antrim and northwest Down. The town was originally known as Lisnagarvy (also spelt Lisnagarvey or Lisnagarvagh) after the townland in which it formed. It became the Lisburn and Hillsborough District Hospital in 1921.
