Not sure whether you need a legal professional? Most law firms will offer at least a free phone call to discuss your needs and you should be offered impartial advice as to whether hiring a law firm is required. Always ask to speak to a qualified individual though before relaying the more in-depth details of the case. Don't be afraid to ring round and ask several firms about free consultations to try and get a better idea before deciding how to proceed or who with.

Defendants may hire a solicitor or barrister to represent them, often paid for by legal aid. All barristers who have not been called to the Inner Bar are known as Junior Counsel (and are idenitifed by the postnominal initials "BL"), regardless of age or experience. Also at the back of the court, often adjacent to the dock, is an area from where members of the public can observe the proceedings. Her Majesty's Solicitor General for England and Wales, known informally as the Solicitor General, is one of the law officers of the Crown in the government of the United Kingdom. Several countries that originally had two or more legal professions have since fused or united their professions into a single type of lawyer.

In many countries the traditional divisions between barristers and solicitors are breaking down. As a result, the meaning of the term "lawyer" may vary from place to place. Both belong to the ruling party in the parliament. Japan adopts a unified system. In countries like the United States, that have fused legal professions, there are trial lawyers who specialize in trying cases in court, but trial lawyers do not have a legal monopoly like barristers. The Family Court sits at many locations in England and Wales, and it usually sits at the County Court centres and magistrates courts where family work was previously heard by county courts or family proceedings courts. Some courts, such as the Crown Court in England and Wales may have both trial and appellate jurisdictions.

It took its duties up on 1 October 2009. In writing, they are referred to as "John Smith Esq. , law is primarily taught at law schools. All judges sit in judgment on the monarch's behalf (hence they have the royal coat of arms displayed behind them) and criminal prosecutions are generally made in the monarch's name. A County Court hearing is presided over by either a district or circuit judge and, except in a small minority of cases such as civil actions against the police, the judge sits alone as trier of fact and law without assistance from a jury. Section 27 of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990, in England and Wales, and section 24 of the Law Reform (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Scotland) Act 1990, in Scotland, created a route for solicitors to qualify for a grant of rights of audience in the higher courts when they have sufficient training and experience, subject to passing additional exams.
