The advantage with having the State Bar Councils is that the workload of the Bar Council of India can be divided into these various State Bar Councils and also that matters can be dealt with locally and in an expedited manner. The Old Bailey is the unofficial name of London's most famous criminal court, which is now part of the Crown Court. The present legal basis of the Office of the Official Solicitor dates from 1981 when, under s.90 of the Supreme Court Act 1981, that the Official Solicitor became a statutory officer of the then-Supreme Court of England and Wales appointed by the Lord Chancellor under the name of Official Solicitor to the Supreme Court. This involved creating a whole new Handbook to create a regulatory framework in which law firms could deliver the best outcomes for their clients using a business model adapted specifically for their situation. When exercising civil jurisdiction, the Royal Court almost always sits as the Inferior Number that is, comprising the Bailiff (or the Deputy Bailiff, or a Commissioner) and two Jurats. As authorised by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, Part 3, Section 23(1), the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom was formally established on 1 October 2009. However, in a large number of countries, a law student must pass a bar examination (or a series of such examinations) before receiving a license to practice.

Litigants are normally represented by counsel but may be represented by solicitors qualified to hold a right of audience, or they may act in person. Solicitors in Ireland are represented and regulated by the Law Society of Ireland. As is the practice in many other Commonwealth jurisdictions such as Australia, Canadian litigators are "gowned", but without a wig, when appearing before courts of "superior jurisdiction". The field of action of a solicitor is versatile and cannot be easily displayed. Everyone present is required to show their subjection to the court by standing as the judge enters (or exits) until he/she sits down. To demonstrate competence, a solicitor must pass a number of assessments. While the independent bar continued to exist in a largely unchanged state, a few firms of solicitors employed their own barristers and solicitor advocates to do some of their court work. The training contract was formerly known as an articled clerkship.

During 2004, a select committee of the House of Lords scrutinised the arguments for and against setting up a new court. In some jurisdictions, a barrister receives additional training in evidence law, ethics, and court practice and procedure. If the defendant indicates a plea of "not guilty", or declines to indicate a plea, the court hears an outline of the facts from the prosecution and representations from the defendant or his representative, and then determines whether the case is suitable for summary trial or not. In this manner the Bar Council of India also ensures the standard of education required for practising in India is met with. In writing, they are referred to as "John Smith Esq. Supreme Court in 1973 and 1985, respectively. This rigid separation no longer applies. The other magistrates are known as wingers. In addition to the judge, the Royal Court includes the Jurats.
