Foster & Coleman Ltd Solicitors in Bromley, Greater London:

If you've already flicked through a dozen law firm websites today looking for one that can help you with your case, you may have noticed that most of them have the same sort of language which makes it difficult to tell them apart. Many even have the same images of people smiling and shaking hands. So what can you use to separate them and find the firm that fits your needs best?

"Foster & Coleman are a dynamic law firm providing the very best advice and representation in relation to a wide range of practice areas."

This snippet from the Foster and Coleman website sounds great, but since no firm is ever going to claim the opposite (i.e. that they provide poor advice and terrible representation) it's not a statement that really helps.

"They now bring that successful track record, as well as almost 40 years of experience, to their own practice."

Finding a Law Firm in the UK

This statement is part of a brief history of the setting up of the firm. It states the firm is relatively new which brings up a point about law firms we've covered before but which bears repeating. It's common for solicitors to make huge claims about ancient founding dates such as 'established in 1881' or even older. The idea being that the older the firm, the more established and experienced.

This is simply not true any more. Whilst that may have been a good indication of a qualified firm during the last century, people move jobs now and create new firms much easier. For example you'd obviously be much better off with a 40-year veteran lawyer from a 1-year old firm than a 1-year qualified newbie solicitor that happens to work at a 200-year old brand name.

"With a reputation of providing prompt, practical and cost-effective solutions in a number of practice areas, they can guide you through the most challenging of circumstances."

The most common place people go to first when researching a firm is the public review boards such as Google, Facebook, Trustpilot, Yell, etc. This is the main way people judge a firm's 'reputation'. Foster Coleman do have a testimonials page on their website with comments such as:

"we have a very positive outcome, as compared to what could have been"

"always easily contactable by phone or email and quickly responded to any queries"

"did absolutely everything possible to save my career"

However, according to our poll a few years back the majority of people put a lot more faith in independent forum reviews over company provided testimonials from previous clients. This can be difficult when looking up comments about law firms though. People have no problem jumping online to type their thoughts about a local pizza place or lamp store - they are less likely to rush to tell everyone how their bankruptcy, messy divorce, or criminal law case is going. So if you find minimal or even zero reviews for a law practice that shouldn't be taken as a negative sign. There were some comments available when we looked:

"they have made me and my family very happy"

"Outstanding service"

"comitment to their clients requirements"

But note that when you search for a firm you need to make sure the name is correct and we suggest typing the town name of their office as well to ensure you don't get incorrect feedback. There are several similarly named firms such as 'foster & foster' and 'foster law' that popped up while we were searching.

A good alternative resource we've recommended multiple times for backchecking legal professionals is the website of The Law Society of England & Wales. They have a huge amount of user side data about the firms and people registered with them. If you look up the page for any firm you'll see other names they might go by, contact details, staff names, languages spoken, areas of law covered, and even qualification dates of the solicitors within the firm.

"Legal advice you can depend on, from people you can trust"

A quick note on navigation considering the alternate firms that kept popping up during our researching. The official website for this firm is www.fosterandcoleman.com and currently www.fosterandcoleman.co.uk does not redirect you. The site is https secure for submitting your personal details on their contact form.

Be aware that ampersands can't exist in website URls so www.foster&coleman.com will either return an error or redirect you to search results depending on which browser you are using. This isn't as big an issue for this firm as their case range focuses on business/commercial law matters. The majority of scams the past several years have all focused on residential property matters. But always be aware of the website you are entering your details into and never discuss payment details via email just in case.
