Murray Hay Solicitors for Putney & Wandsworth: Review
Some firms build a website with the focus on looking "professional". They hand the project over to some web designers who come back with a design that they believe looks very business-like, with a great menu, a few funky features, and every possible button or link anyone would ever expect to see on such a site. Other firms have minimalist sites. With very little information, a few nice pictures, but the focus on trying to get people to phone up with their questions rather than obtain their own answers from the site. Then there are the sites trying to be "modern" by placing feeds of their Twitter page, photos of them in fancy dress at a work party, and links to local events that they are hosting.
Murray Hay do an excellent job of combining all three. No seriously. Read our other reviews of firm's websites and you'll see that we rarely have "ooh!" responses to them. It's been a long time since I've seen a solicitor strike a balance between professional visuals, enough but not too much content, and a friendly feel that doesn't require photos of everyone in a pub.
We'll come back to the content later, but first some background:
Murray Hay are a high street firm handling individual and business legal issues. Their office was originally in Putney, but they have recently moved just over the Putney border into Wandsworth. They have 25 years behind them in the area, which will have given them plenty of time to have a wide, loyal, local client base. The client reviews on their site reflect that sort of setup. Such as:
- "Lisa once again exceeded my expectations, as Ian did on my previous sale, and I would like to thank them both."
- "We will use Lisa again and again and keep referring Murray Hay. "
- "We both found you provided an excellent service at a good price – also you treated us like old friends though we had never met. Thank you!"
They have attained the Law Society Conveyancing Quality Accreditation and one of their solicitors, Robert Hammond, has been accredited by 'Resolution' (a 6,500 strong group of solicitors working together on family law issues) as a specialist in family law. They also promise to provide competitive rates, for prompt and efficient legal services, from a friendly team, with many years of experience.
Heading up this friendly group of experienced people are Ian Hay and Colum Murray. Ian has 30 years experience in residential and commercial property. He established the firm in Putney in 1988 as a property specialist, and certainly there does seem to be a leaning towards those types of matters. Colum came to the firm after working in Hong Kong and having his own private practice in Wimbledon. He has also put 30 years into the firm, working mostly in business and commercial property areas. He works with Landlords and Tenants, and can deal with property financing too.
Richard Rooney has also come to MurrayHay from his own practice in Wimbledon to help with the property work plus litigation matters. Lisa Mansfield has 25 years at the firm, handling mostly residential property matters. The aforementioned Robert Hammond specialises in family law as we said, including divorce of married couples and handling disputes between unmarried couples. Sheridan Taylor is a barrister with experience in wills, probate, trusts, power of attorney, etc.
There are others making up the diversely experienced team giving the firm a huge range of case types to cover. On their site they state abilities in Family Law including divorce, separation, cohabitation, pre-nuptial agreements, children, abuse and more. Wills and probate, commercial and residential property, conveyancing, landlord and tenant issues, environmental law, motoring offences, debt recovery, employment law, business law, and loads more. Really, the list is longer than this whole article. It's probably best just to ring and ask as they probably do handle your type of case.
Hopefully if you've visited the site, seen the layout, the type of promises made in the content, the photos and descriptions of staff, etc. you'll agree with us that the website actually reflects a sort of personality to the firm, rather than just being another professional looking website with links. To finish it off, we spotted this statement:
"The firm is made up of both male and female staff of varying ages, religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. The social economic background of staff is varied with some having attended state school and some having attended independent/fee paying schools. Some staff have been to university and some members of staff have caring responsibilities."
Just a quick note on navigation though. Luckily, the website is the firm's name, the name is simple, and it's a regular tld with the .co.uk - however the www.murrayhay.com address does not seem to belong to them and was displaying some weird stuff when we looked. So as usual, best practice is to bookmark the site once you know you're on the correct one.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Murray Hay Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.murrayhay.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
