Bromets Solicitors in Tadcaster, Selby, North Yorkshire: Review

From Grade II offices in Tadcaster, and having been in operation for over 165 years - Bromets are a historic Yorkshire based solicitors practice, providing specialist advice in capital tax planning, trusts and succession issues, Wills and probate, commercial and residential property, family and matrimonial law, employment, litigation and personal injury matters.

Whilst we, and they, refer to the firm as simply "Bromets", that is the shortened trading name of Bromets Jackson Heath LLP. Certainly, we can't fault the decision to shorten that. As the only solicitors practice in Tadcaster, you might think that branding would not be a huge issue. But with the range of case types covered, their clients are based across Yorkshire and often nationwide. Conveyancing, employment law, wills, personal injury claims and so on often do not require consistent local knowledge to complete successfully.

Bromets promise that for each of their areas of practice, they have a specialist solicitor on the team who is experienced and "passionate" about their area of law.

Agricultural cases will receive a free initial consultation to discuss the problem. Conveyancing, whether a first time buyer or a property portfolio investor, they believe they have the experience to handle it all. Commercial & Corporate clients can rely on their specialist knowledge of the property markets and the complexities involved in development, plot sites and sales. Dispute Resolution cases come with the warning that it is important to seek advice as soon as possible to discover your options. Employment law through Bromets can be for either side of the fence - employer or employee. For Family Law they promise a "sympathetic yet practical" approach with "the right advice at the right time". They can act for both landlords and tenants.

Expectedly, Personal Injury claims of compensation for victims of accidents will also receive a free initial interview to discuss the claim. Unlike the other case types mentioned above, though, personal injury should generally also come with a no win, no fee arrangement - plus 100% compensation. That means no fees if the case loses, and no fees if the case wins.

On the 2nd of April, Bromets Solicitors opened a new office in Wetherby after purchasing the established divorce and family solicitors firm, Freeman & Co. Bromets had already worked alongside Freeman & Co for many years at their office on North Street. The merging firm's owner, Maureen Freeman, has been appointed as an Associate Solicitor in the now increased family department.

If you've ever come to 1to1Legal looking for a law firm before, you'll know that we have a hefty dislike for testimonial pages. Many firms will post comments on their website that sound vague, over-complimentary, or simply odd. This is because most firms will get testimonials by asking people that have clearly been happy with the service to write a testimonial for them. We don't think this is a reliable or even genuine way to get such information across. If the recommendations are spontaneous, then they are easy to spot as such. Bromets testimonial page was not nearly as ridiculous as some we've come across, however there were a few odd bits. Such as more than one review using the phrase "I would like to take this opportunity to thank you" and more than one review starting with an "just a short note to say thank you" opener.

Admittedly, taking this firm onto the 1to1Legal network was an aberration from our usual methodology. Usually, we accept applications only from firms that pass rigourous checks. Bromets passed most, expect for a reputation check. However, our panel manager felt that something was not quite right about the information circulating around the web. For example, reviews of the firm on Yellow Pages were incredibly poor. But on Google, they were highly positive. There were upheld complaints in the Legal Ombudsman's database, but then news articles about negligence accusations being overturned. There were quite a few comments about a slow, uninterested staff - however, the person we dealt with at the firm was suppose to be going on maternity leave yet still rushing around sorting things out. Plus, more news articles such as this one talking about their charity work, giving up time to write wills for free in exchange for a donation to the St Leonard's Hospice in York.

Then we spotted something.

Confusingly, there is more than one website for a firm called Bromets in Tadcaster. The one we link to above does not have a counterpart - i.e. www.bromets.co.uk goes nowhere. However, there is an entirely separate site at www.bsl-law.co.uk, except this time the www.bsl-law.com version goes nowhere. Also, each site has a different address within Tadcaster. One is called Bromets Solicitors Ltd and the other is called Bromets Jackson Heath LLP. Yet both sites are quite similar in colour co-ordination and layout. Unfortunately, that will result in jumpy and disorienting information around the web. On this occasion, we would stress that it is even more important that you bookmark the correct site once you know you are on it to save making a mistake later on. Please note, that they use a non-www version of the domain name - so www.bromets.com will be automatically redirected to remove the www.

Despite all that, we decided to go with this firm based on our gut. At least give them a call to form your own impression of how they sound and how they treat you.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Bromets Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.bromets.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
