Guardian Law Ltd - Employment & HR Lawyers in Nottingham: Review
We have consistently warned people about the public review boards when researching a company you're thinking of using. They are an excellent resources and we absolutely recommend checking through them. But you simply must make sure to read the comments left by people rather than simply glancing at star ratings. We've seen a law practice praised for its 'tasty new menu' and a divorce specialist given a zero-star rating for refusing to handle someone's criminal law case.
Today's article is on Guardian Law, an Employment Law specialist based in Nottingham working on the businesses side of the aisle. This brings up an extra point about reviews - i.e. that they are not as easy to find for law professionals compared to other industries. That's because while many people are very happy to post about the great pizza or hotel stay, they are less inclined to publicly discuss their messy divorce, bankruptcy, or criminal convictions.
This means that if you see any law firm with a minimum number of reviews, it's inadvisable to take that as a negative sign without any other context. At the time of writing we could only find a total of four reviews on the most popular boards such as Google, Facebook, Trustpilot, and Yell. They were all very positive, but lacking enough comments/content to provide a good overview of the firm. So what other resources are there?
If you've been through a few other legal company websites today you'll probably have noticed they all use very similar language such as this statement from the Guardian Law site. It raises the point that if every firm says they are 'experienced' (and no firm would admit to being 'inexperienced') then how can you know which one is better than the other?
Luckily for the English and Welsh consumers seeking legal help, there is an excellent resource from The Law Society in those areas. They provide a wide range of data on each law firm and legal professional registered with them including all business aliases, alternate contact details, speciality case types, and qualification dates of the solicitors. For this firm you'll see the two principal solicitors Claire Scanlan and Nichola Elenor qualified in 2003 and 2002 respectively. That's a good four decades of combined experience between them.

One thing which really stood out to us about this firm is they seem really into their chosen area of law. Almost obsessed. There are several statements such as these two offering free help articles. There is a backdated blog of articles with dozens of advice segments with titles such as 'Risk to employers of backdated holiday pay claims', 'Restrictive Covenants – are they worth the paper they are written on?', and 'How do you unfurlough staff?'.
To us that indicates the best qualities of a specialist firm in that they genuinely seem to care about businesses by trying to get as much useful advice out there. Plus this would also indicate they stay very much up to date with the huge number of changes constantly affecting businesses in the UK and internationally.
A quick note on navigation as branding changes such as this aren't the only thing to pay attention to when clicking back and forth to firms online. This firm's official website is www.guardianlaw.co.uk but www.guardianlaw.com brings up a different legal practice in the USA. That shouldn't cause too much confusion. However when we searched for 'guardian law' online we were returned a few alternative suggestions in the top slots including the legal section of the Guardian Newspaper.
To get the correct reviews to come up we needed to enter the full 'guardian law nottingham' but that is the case for many companies now if you're trying to find information/reviews. Especially those with multiple offices. Please also note that the firm's original HR site at www.yourhrlawyer.co.uk has now moved to www.guardian.online as a separate resources. This may provide a whole extra set of free help articles which might be of use.
This is all very important to consider though because there are a lot of scams targeting clients of lawyers these days. Most target the clients of law firms that handle conveyancing matters but you never know what they'll come up with next. So make sure you are always on the correct site and never discuss payment details via email.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Guardian Law it's best to visit the website (www.guardianlaw.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
