Cook Legal Ltd Law Firm in Wirral, Merseyside: Review
It wasn't too many decades ago that people's legal assistance choices included a handful of solicitors all with centre-of-town high street offices. They handled a wide range of services and if you wanted something done, you went down or rang for an appointment.
Of course since the birth of the internet, anyone under the age of 30 will have no clue what that feels like. So when they see lots of law firms stating local roots or activities it may seem like a marketing ploy. Like when a new food item is trying to go viral, they'll push the idea of it belonging to a certain area. But law firms were genuine local fixtures for centuries before the internet arrived.
That's the first paragraph from the website of law firm Cook Legal Ltd. A firm that seems to mention it's connection to the area on every page. However when law firms do this it tends to be more about continuing the idea of solicitors as local business fixtures, rather than an insistence that they only cover clients in that area.
Most law firms will be able to cover much larger areas. Law firms authorised to practice in England & Wales can practice in any area of those countries. With todays video chat and secure online document services, the majority of cases don't require you to have to visit a lawyer's office at all. You will need a law firm authorised to work in Scotland for Scottish cases, Northern Ireland for NI cases, and Republic of Ireland for ROI cases. Each of those has different laws and legal setups.
One thing people may not know about is that for legal practices in England & Wales you can look up a wealth of details about them on the Law Society's website. Unlike the Scottish and Irish law societies, the Law Society of England & Wales provide a great user-side database including each firm's office locations, contact information, areas of law covered, languages the staff speak, qualification dates of any solicitors within the firm, and more.
When people want to get an idea of past customer experiences, they tend to go to the independent boards such as Facebook, Google or Trustpilot. Many firms provide testimonials on their websites. But as they typically only post the positive comments - you don't get to see any potential negative themes if they exist.
It's not always as easy to find reviews of legal companies though. People are always quick to post a review of the last pizza place they just ate at. But they tend not to run online to discuss their criminal charges, will, messy divorce, or bankruptcy. So when you see a solicitor's practice has hardly any reviews that doesn't always mean something negative. Either way we always recommend reading the actual comments rather than flicking through star ratings.
"answered all of our questions promptly and with full clarity"
"extremely supportive and incredibly efficient"
"we received regular communications and advice"
Those are a few snippets from third party review forums online. Google has changed how you find reviews of firms on their search though. Now you may have to state the location of a company's office to see reviews. They also only show reviews for that particular location. So if a law firm has several offices, you have to look up each one individually if using Google.
A quick note on navigation. There are other firms with the name "Cook" in them. This firm's official website is www.cook-law.co.uk with www.cooklaw.co.uk and both .com versions of the web address being used by other lawyer offices. There are also a couple of firms using the name "Cook Legal", one of which is based nearby in Birkenhead. So you may wish to bookmark the site just in case you are coming back later. The site is HTTPS secure for submitting your personal information on their contact form.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Cook Legal Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.cook-law.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
