Crockett & Co Family Law Solicitors in Leeds: Review
Today's article covers a specialist law firm. While it discusses this firm in particular, we'll try to provide general tips and sources you can use when researching any law firm in the UK. It should be noted though, that there are various ways a firm might refer to themselves as a 'specialist'. It could be their entire firm only handle that particular area of law. Or it could be that they are a larger firm covering several areas of law, but with each lawyer within the firm specialising in one particular case type.
This statement might mean more than you think. Despite the general concept amongst people in the UK that there is free legal help for them if they can't afford it - that is not always the case. Legal Aid started being stripped back in the '90s and has continued to be gutted be successive governments ever since. The number of people in the UK that might qualify and the number of case types it applies to is dwindling.
The fact legal aid does not pay anything close to what a law firm would normally charge for their work either has resulted in most firms in the UK refusing to have anything to do with it anymore. Even when Legal Aid might be applicable. We have hundreds of law firms registered on our network and only a handful will accept clients who might be seeking legal aid. So the fact this firm declares they will help people through Legal Aid within the first sentence of their website - does actually say something about them.
As mentioned before, the word 'specialist' can be used in various ways. For Crockett solicitors the whole firm deals with only family law matters and wills/probate. But beyond simply specialising, the other thing most people want in their legal representative is experience. How can you check that? Many firms will make claims such as '40 years of experience within the firm' but that could simply mean they have 10 members of staff all with 5 years of experience.
Luckily, if you are looking for a firm in England or Wales there is a great resource online. The Law Society of England & Wales lists most firms providing their contact information, areas of law covered, and a list of registered solicitors within the firm. They also provide the qualification dates of each law professional registered. While not a 100% perfect way to guarantee experience, you can at least see if the solicitor you're talking to has been a solicitor for twenty years or twenty days. For example the founding solicitor at at Crocketts, Helen Crockett, qualified in 1988.
The qualification dates and experience of the actual solicitors within a firm can be a great indicator and give peace of mind. However we would not suggest putting as much stock in founding dates. This firm's claim of 1991 seems quite reasonable. But we've seen many firms touting "established in 1881" or claiming "150 years serving the local community". Such dates will merely be about the brand name. There is obviously no 150-year-old solicitor working at these firms. So no matter how old the firm is, it's the experience of the solicitor that matters most. You could end up with a 1-year green lawyer from a 40-year-old law firm and vice versa.
Most people, when they read stuff about previous clients, will immediately jump to the prior customer reviews. According to our poll a few years back, 91% of you would skip the company-provided testimonials and go straight to an independent comment board such as Google, Facebook, or Trustpilot. So what are people saying on those forums?
"very professional, helpful and efficient"
"made the process less stressful through excellent communication"
"supported me through the hardest times"
The majority of posts about the firm are like these and very positive. A theme of a caring attitude was most prevalent. Google has changed how you find reviews though so if you can't see anything pop up when searching for the firm's name alone, try inserting the name of the office location as well - e.g. 'crocketts solicitors in leeds'. We also recommend reading actual comments rather than flicking through star ratings when it comes to legal professionals. In the past we've seen a divorce law firm get a negative review for refusing to take on someone's personal injury claim. It takes all sorts ...
The actual details of the advice clinic seems to change since Covid was upon us so it might be an idea to check on availability before heading down. Their official website is at www.crockettsolicitors.co.uk with the .com version currently being owned by someone else. The site is HTTPS secure for submitting your personal details through their contact form if you'd rather have a callback.
Despite the firm's branding being 'Crockett & Co' you can't have ampersands in web addresses so www.crockett&co.co.uk could not exist. Also note that they are listed as 'Crockett Ltd' with organisations such as The Law Society page we link to above. It also wouldn't be too difficult for some people to misspell the name with the double K at the end. All these things are important to consider. Always keep aware of which websites you're on and who you are exchanging emails with. There are so many scams involving law firms the SRA has a search database people can use.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Crockett & Co Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.crockettsolicitors.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
