Emerald Law Personal Injury Solicitors in Liverpool, Merseyside: Review
With a name like "Emerald Law" and including a four leafed clover design in their logo - you'd expect them to be based in the heart of the Isle of it's namesake. But this firm is actually based in Liverpool, servicing England and Wales like any normal Liverpudlian law firm would. However, this is the only firm on our referral panel (and indeed that we have seen) that also serves Northern Ireland as part of their jurisdictional reach. Therefore, the name and the logo cannot be criticised.
A quick look at the language of their site shows that they try to be different. They say their lawyers specialise in not just knowing the law, but applying it to suit you. They state their main areas are personal injury, commercial property, debt recovery, employment law and medical negligence. And they promise to get you through the process of each of those as quickly and inexpensively as possible.
One thing they state that seems to be an increasing trend, is that they will provide a single lawyer to run the case from start to finish. They say this ensures that both client and lawyer get to know each other which will help the running of the case. They also believe it’s "fundamental to great service". Certainly, a lot of firms are stating single point of contact as a benefit of using them so hopefully that trend will become the standard.
More importantly, something that will definitely reassure potential clients - is their statement that they have already processed thousands of cases.
There are a lot of new faces, not just on the high streets, but especially on the web. It is difficult to tell whether a firm has history, or has just sprung up overnight. People come to 1to1Legal because we only refer them to quality, existing, established firms. That's why Emerald Law are on our network. We believe they have the experience, the staff, and the modern setup to cater for the type of people that use our site.
Emerald Law are not only regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) but are also members of The Law Society, plus Liverpool and Sefton Chambers of Commerce.
One area we see them as having well established within their firm is the Road Accident department. They offer complete accident management including sorting repairs, arranging a hire vehicle as well as the legal side of recovering compensation for losses and personal injury. Road traffic accident claims come under their no win, no fee arrangement.
They also cover compensation claims for Trips and Slips, Accidents and Illness Abroad, Medical Negligence, Beauty/Cosmetic Surgery Claims, Dental Negligence, Workplace Accidents and Professional Negligence. Their Industrial Disease team handle the staples of industrial actions, such as Noise Induce Hearing Loss, Vibration White Finger, Asbestosis, Occupational Asthma, Occupational Dermatitis, Cumulative Back Injury and so on.
Aside from personal injury, they also want to help with Employment Matters, Unfair Dismissal
Wrongful Dismissal, Discrimination, Redundancy Advice, Settlement Agreements, plus Wills, Trusts and Probate. On the business side of things, they handle Commercial Property, Commercial Litigation, Contracts, Debt recovery, Redundancy Advice, Disputes, TUPE Advice and other Settlement Agreements.
The principal solicitor at the firm is Oonagh Burns. This is where the green blood flows into the firm. As a native of Co. Armagh, Ireland Oonagh founded Emerald Law in 2009 with her friends and family making up the core members of the Emerald Law team. She believes this has given her firm strong foundations based on trust and integrity.
Oonagh's wealth of experience spans all areas of litigation - especially Medical Negligence, Employment Law, Property Law, Wills and Probate. She is very passionate about access to justice and engages in any lobbying of the government over the preservation of the public’s legal rights. If you have used this firm some time ago, you may be looking for an Oonagh Mary Millar, or Oonagh Murphy at the firm. I'm not sure about the name changes, but all evidence points to them all being the current Oonagh. The 'Burns' one.
Another noteworthy staff member it seems, is Paula Scullion. She has received special mention on the front page of the site and on several pages within. As the senior solicitor of the Road Traffic Accident department, Paula qualified in 2011 with a degree in Law & Politics from Queens University Belfast. She then completed the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in Chester.
Paula specialises in personal injury but has a particular interest in professional negligence claims. She worked in property law for three years before joining the team, so has experience in both residential and commercial property matters.
If, as the description seems to suggest, all these people have come together from Ireland to Liverpool to provide legal services together - then that is a statement in itself about the dedication they have to the firm and each other.
Their testimonials are glowing:
"Many thanks for the brilliant way you dealt with our claim, excellent example of good client service. We were so happy with the way you looked after us."
"The service was spot on, I was really pleased with how the claim was handled and I would definitely recommend Emerald law to a friend or instruct them again in the future if I had another legal matter."
But then again, they always are. Otherwise firms probably wouldn't put them on their sites. However, these have been used to emphasise the focus on customer service and friendliness. And that is something you can absolutely guesstimate from your initial time with them.
A word of advice on browsing - whilst www.emeraldlaw.com currently takes you to the website of an American firm, that simply means that it is owned by someone else. If that firm ever drop it, it could be taken on be less scrupulous people. So it is probably best to bookmark the right site when you know you're on it. The hyphenated www.emerald-law.com and www.emerald-law.co.uk versions don't currently seem to be owned by anyone.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Emerald Law Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.emeraldlaw.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
