Mason Bullock CCJ & Employment Solicitors in Coventry: Review
Mason Bullock Solicitors was an unusual situation for us when it came to deciding on whether to add them to our network. Typically we research a firm completely unbias and make the decision based on several factors such as their setup, case range, reviews, standing with the relevant regulatory bodies, and so on.
However with Mason Bullock Solicitors we were actually very eager to get them on to the network from the start. Did that mean we skipped over the usual checks? Of course not. To make sure you don't think we fast-tracked even just this one firm we'd like to share some of the things we saw. The reason we were so keen though, was simply from one opening line on their website:
This may look like an ordinary sentence to most, but do you know how many main stream legal firms help people get a CCJ set aside? At the time of writing, these are the only ones on our entire database. It's a difficult area of work, often futile, and not a massively well paying job to take on. There are far better paying areas of law which is probably why so few firms get involved.
It's not just a side project either with the firm stating very clearly that it specialises in just three areas - CCJ removal, employment law, and it's related settlement agreements. If you ever want to look up the specialties or qualification dates of the solicitor you are thinking of using, there is usually that information on the firm's local Law Society website. Mason Bullock are registered with The Law Society of England & Wales and if you check the page they have about this firm you'll see Andrew Crisp's stated areas of expertise and that he qualified as a solicitor in 1999.
This niche focus and lengthy experience clearly makes for a efficient and effective service if the public reviews are anything to go by:
"go out of their way to help people out"
"extremely professional, pragmatic and practical and highly responsive with advice, guidance and delivery"
"offered reassurance as well as professional advice"
These are snippets from the usual forums such as Google, Trustpilot, Yell and Yelp. Mason Bullock don't have a company-made testimonial section on their site either. So highly are they publicly praised, they've felt comfortable enough to link their testimonials section to their TrustPilot reviews page instead.
Mason Bullock have also tried to raise awareness of the terrible injustice of CCJs in recent years ever since an online claims process has allowed debt firms to channel cases through a Northampton 'court' that will give them legal powers without ever having heard from the defendent or confirmed they even knew about the case to begin with. The situation was at least slightly covered in this news piece on the Daily Mail website where Mason Bullock where sought for comment.
This is another statement that may not stand out to general consumers, but does to us. One thing we've always pushed for in the compensation claims industry is more care of the client rather than a money-fixes-everything approach. When it comes to personal injury it seems that many solicitors are just pushing clients through, taking a cut of the compensation cheque, and that's it. When many of those clients would have benefited more from psychological treatement/assessment or negotiating better coverage for future medical bills. The main difference of the UK compensation process vs the US is that being injured in the UK is not a lottery-win. The courts should be trying to repair the damage done.
The same goes for employment matters where not only the amount is important, but how it is paid out. This can be compared to a Will and how it is worded and the way the finances are passed on in order to ensure your family receive it rather than the bulk going to the goverment.
There were obviously a few niggles in our research. There always are. For example they still linked to the now very defunct Google+ platform and many of the links we clicked on both our desktop and phone browser made the page 'jump' rather than change. However nothing that reflected negatively on the firm's actual potential services.
The firm has been around for a while so if you see mentions of a Mason Bullock starting in 2018 plus another one before that based over in Northampton - they are the same firm. One of the solicitors retired in 2018 and the firm had to be restarted. That brings us to a quick note about navigation. The official site is www.masonbullock.co.uk with www.masonbullock.com not currently being owned by the firm. The most obvious mistake people might make because it's a law firm is to try searching for 'Mason & Bullock' instead. But www.mason&bullock.co.uk can't exist because you're not allowed ampersands in web addresses.
The reason we point out common errors is because of how easy it is for people to think they are on the correct site or being emailed from an official address when they are not. Scammers are getting millions from people every year by pretending to be the person's solicitor. Some people are handing over entire house deposits to fraudsters based solely on an email asking them to change the bank details they pay to. So it's always a good idea to bookmark sites like this if you plan on returning and never discuss payments or bank details via emai.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Mason Bullock Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.masonbullock.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
