Artington Legal - Artington Services Ltd in Woking, Greater London: Review
With an opening slogan of "Doing law, differently" we were always going to at least take a good look at Artington Legal and their offerings. If you've read any of the other review articles on here, you'll know we try to find a varied selection of firms to recommend to people on our 1to1Legal network.
Whether you're after a large firm with a huge case range and national reach, or a more local offering that specialises in a specific area such as criminal law - we think you should have choices beyond just different brand names. So how different is Artington compared to other business law firms?
This snippet from their site certainly sounds very similar to the sales-pitching by other firms. So how can you research the facts behind such statements? Things such as years of experience can often be looked up on the web. Most law firms are members of a local Law Society. If you check the staff page for this firm on the website of The Law Society of England & Wales, you can look up the individual expertise and experience of each solicitor currently available at the firm.
Certainly Artington Legal have a good selection of both well-seasoned experience along with plenty of youthful injections. There are solicitors listed including Alison Morjaria and Nigel Hirst who qualified as solicitors back in 1993 and 1994 respectively. That gives them nearly three decades worth of experience - each. There are also newer staff such as Rachel Duncan (qualified in 2009) and Mark Andrew (2011).
A balance of wiser staff along with hungry-to-prove-themselves staff is always a sought after mix. It avoids stagnation within a firm.
At the moment we essentially have three different types of commercial law practices on our network and we're doing our best to get one of each in as many local areas as we can. The first is the standard high street law firm that has existed for centuries. You have a business-related legal problem, you go to them, they resolve it, you get back to work. The second is the sepecialist firm such as one that deals solely with contracts, or commercial property, or business immigration, etc.
The third is what we would call the business services provider. These firms don't just handle your case and then wave goodbye. They're looking to build long term partnerships and be there to simply bounce off legal ideas if needed. Rather than just handle cases - they will pull together experts from elsewhere to solve all the related needs surrounding your needs and the overall legal setup. Previous clients have left examples of the things they've sought help with on Artington's website:
"They have supported us by drafting key legal agreements with our contractors and partners ..."
"Tad is a trusted advisor ..."
"... helping us protect our IP through trade mark and design registrations globally."
Sadly, as is often the way with more specialist firms, there wasn't a lot of third party reviews to scour through and get an independent impression of client's experiences. Out of all the usual haunts such as Yelp, Trustpilot, Yell.com and Google only those last two even had a rating on the firm. Each had a single 5 Star rating with no comments provided. So, breaking from tradition, we will post some snippets from the testimonials on the firm's own website.
We've tried to avoid doing so since our poll last year came back that only 18% of people actually trusted testimonial comments on a company's website. That was for any company too, not just a legal practice. However, the firms own listed reviews are all we could find for the moment and it would be unfair not to put anything considering we always list reviews for other firms we detail:
"They are responsive, commercially-minded and always deliver advice with a straight bat. "
"They very quickly understood our situation and we didn’t need to spend hours explaining our position. Whilst they empathised with us, they were also honest about the likely outcome of our case so we always knew where we stood. "
"Our case was dealt with efficiently and punctually avoiding a long drawn out process and unnecessary fees "
As mentioned before, if you are trying to research the firm you may see both the name Artington Services Ltd and their trading name Artington Legal. The official site we link to above is www.artington.com with www.artington.co.uk currently redirecting you there as well. To their credit, Artington Legal have actually coughed up the few extra quid it takes to buy up related domains as well. This helps to ensure people find their site easily - for example both www.artingtonlegal.com and www.artingtonlegal.co.uk redirect to the main site as well.
Considering a domain name can cost as little as £5 a year, we're always surprised to see so many law firms not bother to buy a couple of extra variants when they are available. We would have thought that most property firms at least would take a vested interest in ensuring their client's online safety by doing so. House sales are often targeted by scammers so if there is a domain name almost matching the real firm's - that's a temptation we don't think they should be leaving out there.
A final word from the firm themselves:
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Artington Legal it's best to visit the website (www.artington.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
