JR Levins Solicitors, Law Firm in Huyton, Liverpool & Birkenhead:
We've worked with Levins Solicitors for several years now so obviously we have a very positive opinion of them as a firm. If you've read some of our other articles though, you'll hopefully know that such being the case doesn't always result in a wholly favourable review piece. We don't just gush about how wonderful a firm is, no matter how long they've been in our directory.
The following is therefore some of the things we like about the company, some quotes from the firm and independent sources, some links to articles on third party sites, and some tips about researching a law firm generally when trying to choose which is the best for you.
There is a trend amongst law firms to state the most ancient founding date they can no matter how tenous the link. We've genuinely seen one firm that stated they were 'continuing a 150 year history in the area' based on the fact they'd moved into a building previously occupied by a much older firm. The idea is obviously that people will trust the experience of a 150 year established firm versus a 1 year old firm.

This is typically complete marketing jargon. At a 200-year-old firm you may get a 1-year qualified solicitor acting for you. At a 1-year-old firm you could get a solicitor with over 40-years of experience under their belt. So Levins' founding date of 1986 (whilst sounding relatively young for a legal practice) absolutely does not mean they have 100 years less experience than the next firm who claim a start date back in 1886. The experience of the staff is the most important thing and we'll cover that later.
This is one of the easiest types of claim to investigate on the web with a wealth of third party review resources such as Google, Yelp, Yell.com, Trustpilot and so on. So how do JR Levins Solicitors stack up on such boards?
"Without them by my side ... I would not be here today writing this review"
"reassured me and helped me understand everything from start to finish"
"made the whole process really easy and straight forward"
Please note this firm has changed from being Levins Law to JR Levins Solicitors in the past few years so you may notice different company titles used in both reviews and the sites they are listed on. You may also have to search individually on Google for reviews about their Liverpool versus Birkenhead offices as Google have stopped merging reviews about different offices even amongst the same firm.
The majority of reviews were clearly very positive. That's why noting about possible firm name and location issues is important. Because we noticed several of the negative comments were followed by comments from the firm themselves stating they have 'no record' of that person being an actual client.
The firm do cover a wide range of legal matters including Civil Litigation, Conveyancing, Crime, Divorce, Personal Injury, Wills and Probate. Most reviews are about their Criminal Law help and Conveyancing work. We always recommend to never judge a general practice firm by it's conveyancing reviews though. Sadly in England & Wales (not so much in Scotland) many things can go wrong with a property sale/purchase that are totally outside the solicitor's control. But the solicitor will always get the blame. So if there are dozens of positive reviews about a legal company and all the negative reviews are about conveyancing - it's something to keep in mind.
If you read the actual comments for a firm rather than just checking star ratings, you can usually tell the people with a genuine complaint versus those that just wanted things to have gone a bit quicker.
An online resource we always highly recommend is The Law Society of England & Wales' website. They provide a huge amount of data user-side for consumers and businesses. If you check out the page about Levins Law on their site you'll see alternate contact details, SRA regulatory status, staff information, areas of practice, languages spoken, and more.
The firm has a range of experienced staff qualified over the past four decades such as David Woods (qualified in 1984), Tracy Morgan (2003), and Jonathan Heath (2011). A good mix of seasoned wisdom alongside young blood eager to prove themselves. Exactly what most people would like to have in a firm handling their case.
You can see the massive difference between the great information provided on the England & Wales law society website though when you check out alternates such as their page on the Liverpool Law Society's website. We're sad to say that even our own local law society (The Law Society of Scotland) does not come close in matching the England/Wales site for usability and information.
The firms website has a considerable number of pages. Most discussing why you should use them of course. But they do have a Meet the Team section which we believe all firms should provide to allow people more of an insight into the people they will be dealing with. We're not too fond of people sharing their favourite colours or pet names. However listing the experience, qualifications, and specialties of each staff member we think is useful to potential clients. Not least to help them feel the firm more approachable.
Levins Solicitors are also quoted many times in related news articles, cementing them as a very established firm and one whose advice seems reasonable or helpful to at least the journalist writing their piece. For example, they were approached regarding the covid testing of students at universities. To quote the LBC site:
A quick note on navigation as many people seem to search for 'levins solicitors', 'levins law' and 'JRL solicitors' for the same Huyton-based firm. The official website of the firm is www.jrlevins.co.uk as linked to above, formerly www.levinslaw.co.uk Currently www.levinslaw.com and other similar variants are owned by someone else.
Their website is https secure. But as JR Levins deal with property matters, you need to make sure you are on the correct site and to never discuss payments or bank details via email or if someone calls you up. You can always hang up and call back on the phone number you know is correct. There is a huge number of people falling for conveyancing scams right now with millions being sent to fraudsters. So take good care about the site you're on and the emails you receive.
