OTS Solicitors Ltd Immigration & Family Law in London, UK: Review
We've often discussed the pros and cons of using a general high street style law practice that covers a wide range of matters versus those that specialise in a single niche. There are many areas of law where people automatically seem to be drawn to specialist firms such as for Criminal Defence, Divorce, Motor Offences and Immigration.
However there are some firms that may look like they cover many areas of law but are still 'specialists'. OTS Solicitors is one such firm. This designation is possible for such firms because whilst they do list several types of legal matter to be dealt with, the individual solicitors within the practice may only handle one case type and will therefore genuinely specialise in it. Making it more of a group of specialists under one banner, rather than a law firm with a few solicitors trying to cover everything at once.
No matter how many law websites you've already dug through today, you'll have seen such a statement on all of them. Words such as 'leading', 'modern', 'expertise', and especially 'award-winning' are used so frequently as to probably have little impact on potential clients surfing for help. For example, many do not state which awards have been won. It could have been for 'best logo design' for all we know.
There are quite a few ways to check the differences between firms though. OTS Solicitors state being listed in The Legal 500, which unfortunately is probably more known amongst other legal industry professionals rather than general consumers. It is a good hallmark of establishment and an indication of adherence to good standards. So not to be sneezed at. (Wherever that expression came from.)
Whilst many people will just flick through a few Google reviews (which we'll come to later) there are other resources we highly recommend to help background check a firm. OTS' claims about their extensive media coverage are certainly true. If you search for news articles on any company it's good idea to make sure to put "quotation marks" around the name of the firm otherwise you will get a lot of irrelvant pieces. We did so and there were dozens including an article where they offered advice regarding international adoptions and one where the increasingly concerning issue of Brexit and it's effect on EU citizens living within the UK was discussed.
This sort of coverage can be a good sign of a firm's establishment as well. But we absolutely would not state that a firm that has not been asked to quote for a news article is therefore a lesser firm. There are many wonderful firms without a single drop of publicity ink.
In every area of the UK there are various Law Societies which legal professionals can sign up to. These are on the national, county or often city level if the population is big enough. OTS Solicitors are signed to The Law Society of England & Wales which is an excellent resource. If you check the pages for this firm you'll see a wealth of details including any alternate trading names, contact details, staff details, qualification dates, and more.
The qualification dates are of special interest to most people when we point this out. Many firms may quote ancient establishment dates stating their firm has been around for over 200 years, only for people to discover no-one at the firm has been a solicitor for more than a couple of those years. Not so with OTS, who have a wide range of experienced staff such as Basil Gulbenkian (qualified in 1965), Veejay Sharma (2005), Oshin Shahiean (2013) right up to the almost brand new Angelique Holm (2019). A mix of well experienced staff alongside new blood eager to prove themselves within the firm and to their clients is always a good sign.
This brings us back to consumer reviews. We check the usual spots most people visit such as Google, Trustpilot, Yell.com and Yelp. Most people know how to spot fake reviews, but the main thing to remember is to actually read comments - don't just glance at star ratings. We once saw someone leave a negative review for a Criminal Law specialist for refusing to listen to them about their Divorce case. That's like leaving a bad review for McDonalds for not selling pizza. So stars don't always reflect real position in the minds of previous clients.
"brilliant from the start and supported me every step of the way"
"responded promptly and professionally to all correspondence"
"professional, prompt and incredibly approachable"
Having said that, you'll be hard pressed to find much negative being said about OTS Solicitors anywhere on the web. At the time of writing they had over 450+ reviews on Google which is quite unheard of for a law firm. The majority were positive like the snippets above. All following the same themes about friendliness and most relating to Immigration as well.
A quick note on navigation. The main web address we link to above is www.otssolicitors.co.uk and currently www.otssolicitors.com does not redirect or have an alternate site. Common errors we would expect such as dropping the extra 's' (i.e. 'otsolicitors' variants) don't seem to occur much in our search function at least. And there doesn't seem to be any other firms with similar names to cause confusion.
At the moment the majority of scams involving legal matters tend to revolve around property deals where scammers send new bank details to people via email pretending to be from their solicitor. For some reason we can't quite fathom, the buyers/sellers don't question this and simply hand all their house deposits over to the fraudsters. Perhaps there's more to it however none of the articles we've read have suggested such. Either way, still be on your guard when typing in web address and never discuss bank details via email. Even if someone phones you, you can always hang up and call your known solicitor back on the actual number you were originally given. One last word from the firm's site:
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with OTS Solicitors Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.otssolicitors.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
