Alexander JLO Solicitors - AJLO in London, Birmingham, Chelmsford, Norwich & Liverpool:

Alexander JLO Solicitors is obviously a very popular firm amongst a huge population with plenty of other options to choose from. They cover a wide range of cases and have 50+ staff. If you check The Law Society's official entry for this firm, you can click each solicitor's name to see their case focus and qualification date. This is always a useful tool to see what real resources are available at most law firms in the UK.

A large number of firms will proudly display ancient establishment dates such as "Founded in 1881", yet on checking their staff records you'll see not one of them has more than 1-10 years of actual experience as a solicitor. The age of the brand name really has no importance at all, other than a marketing gimmick. So how does Alexander JLO stack up? They have an excellent mix of experience and fresh blood, with qualifying dates ranging from 1975 (Peter Johnson) and 1998 (Daniel Mills) right up to 2013 (Matthew Johnson) and 2017 (Morgan Nicholas).

The firm's website ticks all the right web boxes too with a secure https setup (that little green padlock in the browser) and clear navigation to individual sections covering their background, team and the case types they cover. There's plenty of information to get to know the actual firm. The individual pages on each case type are not as in-depth as we've seen elsewhere, but free initial consultations are on offer (covered further down) so you can ask basic introductory questions without racking up a huge bill.

"Our experienced solicitors offer a friendly service, and are dedicated to providing highly professional and successful services by gaining an accurate understanding of each customerÒ€ℒs individual case and objectives."

This snippet from their front page is probably very much like what you've read on dozens of other law firm's sites already. Unfortunately, many people end up skipping over the bulk of any text that starts out quite 'sales-pitchy'. There are a few bits we want to highlight in case you missed them though:

"We are proud to be members of Resolution ..."

Resolution is an organisation with thousands of legal professional members all dedicated to finding the best ways to deal with family law issues with as little confrontation as possible. The fact any firm has taken the time to apply for membership and gone through the process can only be a positive indication.

Finding a Law Firm in the UK

"... are accredited by the Law Society as Family Law specialists ..."

Tens of thousands of solicitors and legal practices are listed in The Law Society's member directory. That's not the same as being accredited. Accredited legal professionals undergo a rigorous process including demonstrating extensive experience, expertise and high standards of practice. Accredited firms will typically display a logo/stamp on their site saying so.

"... listed in the Good Lawyer Guide for a number of areas."

They also link to their listing on the Good Lawyer Guide's website from several pages of their own. The guide is not like a Top 100 or any form of accreditation though. It currently lists over 50,000 firms, so being included is not particularly rare either. However one thing they do (which we don't) that could be very helpful - is allow clients to leave reviews on each firm. So they're sort of a cross between what we do and TrustPilot.

Why is this more helpful than regular review forums such as Google or Facebook or Yellow Pages? Because they're moderated. For example, we've seen a negative review on Google for a Criminal Law firm simply because they refused to take on the reviewer's divorce case. That's not helpful and shouldn't really be allowed in our opinion. Yet six months later after considerable begging, Google are still refusing to remove that review. Alexander JLO Solicitors seem to be having a similar problem. At the time of writing this, they only had a 3.8 star rating on Google which doesn't sound great. But here's an example of one negative review:

"This firm handled the conveyancing for the buyer of my flat in Central London. What should have been a simple transaction with no chain took over six months to complete ..."

It goes on for quite a bit after that. This type of complaint should absolutely be ignored and should really be deleted. This is not one of Alexander JLO's clients leaving a review. This is the person they were up against leaving a negative review for them doing too much due diligence work against him. I'm willing to bet AJLO's actual client wasn't so upset with them doing that. Of the few hundreds public reviews available online for this firm, most are positive:

"I was kept informed throughout the whole process and picked up my keys yesterday. Great job."

"From start to finish the process took less than 5 weeks. Top notch work."

"I will never forget how much their help saved me from a terrible circumstance. Thank you"

"They were patient with all our questions and understanding in helping us find the best way"

Typically we recommend flicking through public reviews and not just relying on the firm's own 'testimonials' page. If you head to third party review forums though, don't just look at average star ratings. We know several excellent firms that have 2 or 3 overall star ratings on some forums yet 5 star everywhere else. If you read the actual comments alongside ratings, you'll be surprised at how many "they only had tea and I drink coffee!" type of negative reviews exist.

The site does have staff profiles as we mentioned earlier which is always good. We're not fans of companies that fill their profiles with everyone's favourite foods, colours, hobbies and pet's names. But on the whole, firms that are comfortable displaying their team's experience, expertise and direct contact details are not just creating a more open and friendly dynamic with potential clients - but also confirming the capabilities of the firm as a whole. On the AlexanderJLO site each staff member has a direct email address displayed and a link to their personal reviews with the Good Lawyer Guide.

"We would be delighted to offer a free initial appointment but are unable to assist with Legal Aid applications."

Sadly most firms we know won't work with Legal Aid any more aside from Criminal Law specialists. Barely anyone qualifies for it these days anyway. But a free initial consultation is always a welcome sight for people who probably have tons of questions about just starting a legal process, let alone the case itself.

We didn't see any opening hours listed on the firms website, but they were stated on their Google Business listing as being 9.30am - 5.30pm, Mon-Fri. We ran a poll in the middle of last year and in this age of mobile phones, email, and 24-hour supermarkets - people do think law firms should provide more out of hours appointments. We agree and many solicitors have started doing at least one late night a week or a couple of half day Saturdays in the month.

A quick note on navigation as the www.london-law.co.uk web address uses generic terms. We would therefore recommend bookmarking the site rather than trying to search for it later. Remember that any error in the browser bar can get you redirected to a totally different site or pushed through a default search engine. For example, www.london-law.com isn't owned by AJLO and the two non-hyphenated versions of www.londonlaw.co.uk and www.londonlaw.com are owned by different firms as well. Some such as www.alexanderjlo.co.uk and www.alexanderjlo.com will actually redirect you to the main site. But considering they deal with property matters, we again would recommend bookmarking. If you haven't heard about the huge number of property sales scams, just search "scammers stole my house deposit" on a news site. At the very least, never discuss bank details or deposits via email.

The firm has other offices around the UK including Liverpool, Birmingham, Chelmsford, and Norwich. These each typically have their own individual website and sometimes branding - e.g. www.liverpool-law.co.uk. But if you search for the firm name plus the name of the town, you should get the correct site.
